Patricia Highsmith: the Ripley series

Has anyone here read Highsmith's Ripley series? Alas, I know it only from the wonderful movie adaptation starring Matt Damon and Jude Law. Is it good? Would you recommend it?

I have. The first three books (The Talented Mr Ripley, Ripley Under Ground, Ripley's Game) are very good, well worth a read. The last two (The Boy Who Followed Ripley, Ripley Under Water) are OK but less interesting.

She also wrote a whole bunch of terrific non-Ripley suspense novels, best among which in my view are Deep Water, This Sweet Sickness, The Cry of the Owl and Edith's Diary. There's a lot more about these books here.

I enjoyed the Ripley series. Read them in a row about 6 years ago. Ripley is such a charming sociopath.

Bought a few books recently for summer reading and two of them are by/about Highsmith--the short stories and the bio.

If you end up liking her work, you could start an author thread. I would contribute.
