You are the man Aqua, you are the man!. I haven't laughed this hard in a long time. I say it's quite becoming of him actually. Maybe it will improve his horrid writing.

Thanks for the good laugh brother, happy fourth to ya.

To buy or to borrow...

Probably 60-70% of the books I read I borrow from the library. I don't like to buy books unless it's something I think I can reread sometime in the future. A great store in the Pacific Northwest is Powell's books - booklover's heaven! They sell new and used books, and they'll buy your old books too. They give you maps to their store when you walk in. They're online too, but the prices aren't quite as good as in-store.

They advertise in the Utne Reader quite a bit, they are one of the bigger and better alternative/independent bookstore chains out there.:)

Where in the Pacific Northwest are they located? I live in the Seattle area, but I've never heard of them.

Sorry, it looks like they're mostly in Portland, OR. I thought they had a couple in Washington too. You can check out their site and locations at powells.com

I live in a big university town so there are A LOT of mom and pop and small chain bookstores. I frequent 'A Change of Hobbit' (the local sci-fi and fantasy bookstore) Moe's Books (mostly for textbooks), Half-Price Books, and a few other little ones. My favorite Cody's closed down about a year ago...I still mourn the loss.

But of course, Amazon is awesome when it comes to deals. I also can't deprive myself of walking through the giant Borders in the next town and splurging!!! :D :D :D :D :D

Have you tried Zunafish?

Zunafish.com is a trading site for paperback books. If I'm looking for a paperback I often check there.

In addition, I like -
  • eBay - but check prices and condition
  • Half.com - very good
  • Amazon - both new and used
  • Local library book sales
  • Used book stores - not much in my area but I always look for them when traveling
  • Tag sales, flea markets, auctions
I especially like Amazon's system where you can buy it new or used. Also use the local library, but I like the convenience of having the book with no time limits.

A mixture of all of the above really. I used to always buy the books on special offer at Waterstones, Borders, etc, and then I realised I was spending WAY too much money. After that I joined the library, but then I had books recommended to me that they just didn't have, plus I love to actually own the books.

So now I either go to second hand shops (there's a fantastic one near where I live and an equally fantastic one near my sister), charity shops, Amazon Marketplace or Ebay.

Don't know why I remembered this thread, but I did. Surfing around the net this morning and stumbled upon the Powell's blog. interesting to view, even if you don't use them.

Oh just about anywhere

For me it depends so much of what kind of book it is. A book in swedish I get at the local bookstore. The ones in english I will basically get from the cheapest place. But the books in Italian I usually borrow from the library since they're so hard to come by at a decent price in Sweden.

Btw, has anyone tried bookdepository.co.uk?

I do a mix of the library and the book store (usually Chapters, a large Canadian chain). I don't buy books online unless I can't find a specific book in a local store. I also spend a lot of time at the library lately. I'm living temporarily in a city that's a 5-hour plane ride from home, so it doesn't make sense to have to ship a whole bunch of books back in the fall.

I buy lots of books, both hardcover and paperback at our local BJ's warehouse (hardcovers are 40% off). I also go to Barnes and Noble a few times a year.

I get books from the library, and I frequent Annie's Book Swap, and oh yes, I belong to the Mystery Book Club, and also buy from Amazon and Christian Book Distributors online. I have tons of books!

I go to either Coles/Chapters or a local second hand bookshop. I also do go to the library. I try not to buy books as much as possible, unless I know that I really want the book; if I don't, then I usually borrow from a library.

I usually buy them in bookshops, here in Lisbon. The most famous is FNAC and there's also the Portuguese Bertrand. Lately I've been going to the El Corte Ingles, since I work nearby.

I'm sorry if something like this has already been posted. . .

Where do you guys usually purchase your books?
Borders? Amazon.com? Barnes & Noble? Used bookstores?

Or do you go to the library & borrow?

I get most of mine from Borders. I've bought a couple from amazon.com as well. Every time I get paid, I make a trip to Borders. :p My girlfriend hates it. She doesn't understand why I just don't go to the library. She thinks most books are a waste of money.

I get mine from a variety of places. I am a fulltime RVer and at most of the campgrounds there is a book exchange for the members. I get most of my books there. That's also where I donate books. I also get books from Fred Meyer's (grocery store) and Costco (warehouse store). Then there are the garage/yard sales and second hand stores.

When I am in Portland, OR, I go to Powell's, in downtown Portland. They also have several satellite stores in the Portland area, including one that is just cookbooks! :D I believe that they also have a website that you can purchase books from. Powell's is about 3 floors on 1 square block and is absolutely amazing. :D They buy used books, also.

same here. i also find myself to put off the books i bought because i have library books to finish

10% of the books I read come from the library. Amazon is too easy with just a click and fast service.:D Plus, when you buy, you can dog-ear it, mark it, write in it, not to mention drawing a fake mustache on the author's picture on the back in-set if it's Saul Bellow.

plenty of people do that library books o_O
