Overwhelmed

I cannot make up my mind on what to read, Everytime i am reading something its always a race to move on to the next book quickly cause i feel like there is so much to read and so little time, as there are other things that need to be done in life as well.

This feeling just overwhelms me, so I start to think that time is precious and whatever i choose is not good enof cause there is always something better or more important or a classic.

Just putting it out there to c if other ppl feel the same or is it jst me :)

I'm going through the same thing here. I've started and stopped about three books now, just not in the mood as of late.

Well... you cant think like that... it is like feeling overwhelmed because there are so many beautiful places in the world and you are not going to get to see them all. There is no point.
What you have to do is enjoy each one as much as you can. Reading is supposed to be a pleasure not a race. At least that is how I feel.

And think, if you read a book a week, lets say you live to be 100, you are going to read 4 * 12 * 100 = 4800. That is not bad. ;)

:D

I've been feeling overwhelmed as of late too. But I've been taking steps to decrease my book purchases to allow me more time to read what I have acquired, and then I made a list of goals that I would like to accomplish.

You might want to start out small. Do something like pick 5 books you want to read by the end of the year. Of those five decide which you'd like to read now and begin.

Reading is just a way of passing time. You could equally watch tv, play a video game, complete a crossword, or do nothing. Time will pass anyway.

If time is precious the last thing you want to do is waste it by reading. :D

Enjoy the book rather than thinking what do I need to read next. Create a list and organize it according to the priority of books for you regardless of the criteria. After the list is ready, start covering each book and just concentrate on the present book and enjoy it!

You remind me of business people collecting money and more money, so they are too busy to enjoy it! :p

I didnt mean to Imply that I feel its a waste of time. I do have a to read list its just the same like sometimes when u think of the universe and its vastness its a little difficult not to get overwhelmed I feel the same way about knowledge:eek:

I found the best technique to get me through those feelings is to read exactly what I want. The fact that there are books for every interest area is obvious, but for some reason I never clued in. I think it had something to do with starting to work. When I was a student I couldn't pay for new books, and the ability to search for books was still limited. Now with Amazon and some spending cash, I make sure that if I'm interested in something, anything, I have a book about it.

I know what you mean. You feel you want to make the best out of every minute you have....

Enjoy the book rather than thinking what do I need to read next.

I'm appreciating this more and more as "free" time has slowly decreased as of late due to work and other factors.

Here, here, SFG75! If I think of how many books I've got on the shelf screaming to be read, I would be paralyzed with indecision and hopelessness. So I'm really trying to "be here now" and just enjoy whatever trip I'm taking at the time!

Same here! I have so many books waiting it's turn but there's never enough time... and I can't help but to keep buying new ones...
I just try not to make a big deal of it and keep telling myself that someday I´ll have time...

Well, I've found that being a member of this forum has helped me get some books off the shelf and start reading - but it's also helped me add a whole lot of books to the "must read" and "must buy" lists.

Agreed. I think we call that a "win-win". :p

What an interesting thread :) I too have a book-buying addiction - I just can't help it, I can't pass a bookshop and not go in, and I can't go in and not buy something...I've run out of room for all the books I haven't read but am intending to.
I can recognise the feeling of not having enough time to read everything you want to (ditto see everything, understand everything), I sat down and made a 'to read' list a month ago and I know full well I'll never stick to it - other reading delights will jump in and I'll forget the list ever existed. But that's okay :) so long as your enjoying what you read I guess it doesn't matter.

It's OK; we all use a list like that to justify our new purchases. Nothing wrong with that.:p

I had a mental list of the next three books I was going to tackle but then my newest order came in and I just had to shuffle my list around.

I really should read all the books I've bought before buying new ones but I can't help buying new books, sometimes I just have to have it you know...

MY husband always tells me "there are e-books you know" and I

am shocked at the thought. I need to "see" them, "feel" them. Put them on my bookcase and look at them with pride. hehehe
