1) One book that made you read it more than once: Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes, just because it was that touching.


2) One book you would want on a desert island: The Bible, just because I have never read it and I kinda want to. (not religious, so I'm not sure how I would take it.)


3) One book that made you laugh: Sellevision by Augusten Burroughs, if you haven't read it, you need to.


4) One book that made you cry: Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, the ending was such a shocker there was a small tear.


5) One book that made you wish you had written: The Catcher in the Rye, just because that books has opened my eyes and really made me think a lot.


6) One book that made you you wish had never been written: Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, I had to read it for English and I hated it SO much.


7) One book you are currently reading: The Headmaster Ritual by Taylor Atrim.


8) One book you have been meaning to read: The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, everyone I know that has read it said it was good, but it could just be over-rated.

The Collected Poems by W.B. Yeats (I don't know if this counts but I just can't live without this book)

Small Gods by Terry Pratchett

Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix by J.K. Rowling (sounds silly but I really loved Sirius)

5) One book that made you wish you had written:
Ex Libris: Confessions of a Common Reader by Anne Fadiman (again, don't know if this counts as a real book but I loved it anyway and wish I could write something as inspiring as this one was for me)

The Merciful Women by Federico Andahazi (this one shows that no matter how I adore books, there are some that I should leave unread)

The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon by Stephen King (possibly the very first 'real' book I ever read and this is the one that got me into reading though I can't even remember if it was any good, which gets me to the conclusion that I should really read it again, after all, I think it deserves it)

Lots, so let's pick Perfume by Patrick Susskind

Les Miserables by Victor Hugo - because it's long and packed with wonderful thoughts. I'll have it in French if I'm allowed a dictionary too!

Catch 22 by Joseph Heller I remember laughing out loud on the train

Lots. As a child it was Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. As an adult I'll go for Charlotte Gray by Sebastian Faulks - specifically the part about the Jewish children and the suitcases. Oh, yes, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - I got really choked reading it aloud to my daughter.

Fun survey!

1) One Book that made you read it More Than Once: Helter Skelter, Vincent Bugliosi. I've read it at least ten times. Fascinating.


2) One book you would want on a desert island: Gone With the Wind, Margaret Mitchell. So long and probably my all-time favorite book. I think it's one of those books I could read over and over again.


3) One book that made you laugh: Are You There Vodka, It's Me Chelsea, Chelsea Handler. I'm a big fan of her show on E and I just read this book last week. Hilarious!


4) One book that made you cry: Tess of the D'Urbervilles, Thomas Hardy. Regardless of what Tess does, she can't catch a break. Truly a tragic figure.


5) One book that made you wish you had written: In Cold Blood, Truman Capote. Not only is it revolutionary, but a compelling read as well. I can only imagine how fascinating the research would have been!


6) One book that made you you wish had never been written: Falling Man, Don DeLillo. A truly awful read which did no justice to 9/11 or DeLillo.

7) One book you are currently reading: Suite Francaise, Irene Nemirovsky. Heartbreaking and completely realistic to the core.


8) One book you have been meaning to read: The next in my pile is Loving Frank, by Nancy Horan, but there are many!


9) One book that changed your life: Again, Gone with the Wind. It has stayed with me and the characters touched me in away that was completely new to me.

Ravelstein by Saul Bellow. It's a putrid and horrifying book that is a disgrace to every piece of paper that bears the awful words put on there by that bad writer. I still cringe when I see copies of the book at the used bookstore. Then again, there is a reason why it's there.

Sophie's World, by Jostein Gaarder. At first, because I just couldn't follow it. I read it all, and everything, but one minute I was following the train, and the next I'd fallen off, but couldn't pinpoint exactly where, or how. After a couple of rereads I did get it, but the sheer wealth of philosophy in that book made me reread a few more times.

Notes From a Small Island by Bill Bryson. I think this is his best and funniest book. His newer travelogues (or autobiography, language studies) are in a different style, more verbose and flowery, or something... which is fine, but I prefer his older writing.

Well, it doesn't really matter to me whether something that has been written wasn't, unless there's currently a book about realistically wiping out the human race. If I had to choose, I'd say The Lord of the Rings.
