Contacting an Author

I've been doing some research, and one of the authors I've been reading a lot of has some intriguing ideas I want to find out more about. In all the research I've done on the subject, including numerous books by that author, there is nothing else available about those ideas. So, I want to contact the author. How would I do this?

I assume if I get in touch with the publisher they could forward the correspondence to the author. I think if the author wanted to respond, they could, and if they wanted me to flock off, the could just ignore me. Not sure though. What do you think?
 
Do the authors you are interested in contacting have websites? Often they include contact information there. I imagine that would be their preferred way of being contacted, and the best way for you to receive an answer. I've contacted two or three authors this way. Friendly, fast, and helpful responses every time, though I guess I'll never know who actually wrote the responses.
 
Usually the author has a website; sometimes there's a c/o address offered through the publisher, or you can get in touch with a publicist.

Unless an author is really big, I've found that most authors are receptive and happy to correspond with readers
 
Many writers are affiliated with schools as professors. I contacted T.C. Boyle this way for an article.
 
She is totally off-line.

She used to be an ethnologist at a museum before she retired, and they won't put me in touch with her. All they have to do is forward my correspondence, and if she doesn't like the attention she could ignore me, but that's what they say.

I'll have to try going through the publisher.
 
It sounds like the publisher is your only hope unless you have a bit of luck. Hopefully the person still has a contract through that publisher or your inquiry may end up in the great vaccuum of the wastebin. Good luck!
 
My suggestion for contacting any author is the publishers, there is just no other way. Write to the author, c/o publicity dept. of the publishers. If you go to the publisher's site, they will usually have a contact page with a publicity dept. address for contacting authors. I've received many letters from various writers, so this actually works. Which author were you thining of writing to?

For everyone else on this thread: I am actually trying to contact the author Michael Cox now, but I cannot find the address of either of his publishers. Help?
