If I liked 'Waking Life' what books should I get?

I watched Waking Life when it came out in theaters a few years back. I didn't love it or hate it, but I remember it being a series of desultory discussions about the meaning of life with real footage filtered through animation.

That makes me think of other desultory works, such as Tristram Shandy, though that 18th century book doesn't work for everyone. The Phillip Dick book mentioned is apparently Flow My Tears, The Policeman Said. I haven't read it, though it's waiting patiently on my shelf.

Possibly the best way to get a feel for the movie through books is in the non-fiction realm. Terry Eagleton recently released a book on The Meaning of Life that covers some of the same ground.

I'm tempted to say Coupland's Generation X, but I don't want things thrown at me. It does have a similar desultory plotless feel, however.

Well, that depends. Are you trying to learn more about some of the philosophies therein, or are you trying to find a work that closely resembles the free-form, intellectual, dreamlike atmosphere of the work?
