Stardust (vs. The Princess Bride)

I've just seen the stardust in the cinema!

It was very beautiful, funny, surprising and smart!

However my friend told me that "princess bride" was better... This is because:
1. There was no "pain machine" in stardust
2. There was no 6-finger man
3. There was no "My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father prepare to die."

I was of a different opinion. I think that this movie is at least as good, if not better!

What would you say?

I haven't seen Stardust yet, but remember not particularly liking The Princess Bride. I thought it was pretty boring. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that when I finally see Stardust (hopefully next week) it'll be good.

I'd say that they are two different movies with two different plots, and even if there are some similarities in tone and themes it would be very strange if Stardust stole major plot elements from The Princess Bride?

I thought TPB was the better movie. That might be more for the cult factor, though there's something to be said for irony as well - TPB seems to be more aware that it's playing with clichés and archetypes than Stardust is. Neither is a masterpiece, both are fun.

When I first saw the title of this thread I was like "Oh no, if Stardust is like The Princess Bride, then forget it, I don't want to see it." lol. I didn't like The Princess Bride very much, it is one of my friend's FAV movies tho, she borrowed it to me, but it is not my cup of tea. However when I saw a preview for Stardust I thought I might like to see it. The newspaper said it sucks tho.

I agree with both points here. While there was some sense of parody in Stardust, it didn't quite match TPB's sense of irony. I'm probably biased toward TPB for nostalgia's sake, but I do find it to be very rewatchable. I doubt I'll see Stardust again for a long time.

I watched Stardust for fun for the first time yesterday. I'm a huge Princess Bride fan so I really didn't have high expectations for this movie - I thought it would be childish and overdone. I was pleasantly surprised, the adventure is fairly original, the romance is sweet and the comic relief is kept to a reasonable limit. In fact I'm so hooked I've watched the movie three times since I got it!

Has anybody read the book? I'd be interested to hear what people think.

The book was way better (as usual). Neil Gaiman had a hand in writing the screenplay for Stardust and made it different enough to be able to fit into a movie format and I think he did a good job of it.
