Occlith, Many thanks for your exceedingly kind welcome also, but it just isn't going to happen.
I came over here only to cast my vote and provide my small factual input to this hopefully constructive discussion. I didn't bargain for the attention I have received. It is gratifying, of course -- very deeply so -- but BAR is a part of my past and not a part of my future, and that is the way it has to remain. I am grateful for the happy times I had here long ago and the kind friends I made then, but life has moved forward from there. I am sorry that is how things have turned out, but I have had a long time to get used to the situation and that is now how it will remain.
My sincerest regards to yourself and to any and all of my other friends here who remember the happy days we had together. I am forever grateful.
Sincerely,
Charles

This makes no sense to me. You only posted once here in 2007.
You have to go all the way back to September 2006 to find more posts before that.

Yet here you are posting in a thread that, like numerous other attempts to foster some change 'round here, will most likely do nothing but create some conversation and little else.

Why does your decision to not be here have to be so concrete?

What drove you away in the first place?

What's keeping you away?

Why can't you be a part of the solution and not part of the problem?
(The problem being people leaving TBF/BAR, or people just not conversating)

What would it take to bring you back?

Obviously you care a litle something about the place or you would not have come back at all. So what else can bring you back?

Once again, Stewart steps up when no one else will. ;)

BOTM oppotunity <-- clicky

Nice idea. I like the pro-active approach.

Shall be interesting to see if there's any interest.

Be sure to chime in on that thread, Moto. Your input is needed there as much as anyone else's;)

Peder:
I'd love to see you back in action over here...for the record!

I just think it sucks when you post something and no one replies.
There's no conversations really happening anymore. :(

That's true. It sucks. But many times it makes no sense to reply, does it?

I one of those who watch silently - I scan for the books or writers that I am interested in, and the old threads are typically a good source of information.

As for a book chat...

Will it make any sense now to come back and post in a "Lolita" thread? Hardly. It was already discussed and whatever one adds, will not be of any interest. I joined BAR too late for that discussion, but I enjoyed reading it (silently). And I feel that the pleasure to participate in it was taken from me, in a sense...

I think however that it is OK here as it is. That's the dynamics, sometimes up and sometimes down. Until a new rebel book will be published (or rediscovered) and people will re-appear :)

It wasn't just the lack of participation in the BOTM discussions, although that was discouraging enough in itself. There was a general aura of ill will at the time I left the forum, a lot of sarcasm and general nastiness was being thrown about, and who needs that?

Better and greener pastures elsewhere.

Didn’t we have a similar discussion a year or two ago?

I come by often, but rarely post. Part of it is because I don’t feel that I have much to contribute, but then there is the fact that spending too much time on the forum takes time away from reading. Also, I have been on the receiving end of ridicule in the past (is it safe to say Dan Brown, yet?) so when I get excited about something I’ve read I usually take the safe route which is of course to post nothing. Will the names Ivan Doig or Rafael Sabatini land me at the business end of a catoninetails?

I have to admit that I have little to no interest in how much is being read. What I want is to discuss books. Along with that, I would love to hear is what others are reading that they feel strongly about.

I don’t believe I’ll ever be accused of raising the forum IQ like our friend Peder, but I do love to read and if I can get past being gunshy then I might be able to contribute.

To all from mehdirza

It is confused to hear something not ridiculious from SFG75 is very good because honestly, I have never heard. And I visit and I post and I measure the reactions I had.

What exactly are you trying to say here?

I'm two seconds from screaming,"Troll!"

uh, ok? Lately, this place has become a vessel for incoherent mumblings from both mehdirza and Helgi.

What is going on here? Seriously, can we get back to intelligent conversations that we can all understand and not respond to this shite?

Word.

I heard there's a great review for the Kindle around here somewhere. Plus people are abuzz about selecting a BOTM for May.

That is just what I was trying to say. Reactions. I love it. By the way, someone was talking about mumblings and intelligence. Well, I first guessed it was a joking but I see it is not. So do I interrupt intelligent conversations with my mumblings? Yeah, I think so. My Intelligence Quotent is 169.
