Things to see in Britain?

I'm getting ready to retire and wanting to see as many interesting things in Britain as I can before dropping off my perch.

I've googled for answers, but they are too touristy. Anyone know of any which aren't?
 
The "tight little island" is bigger than you think. I have traveled there several times. My best literary experience was going to Haworth, the home of the Bronte's. We stayed in a little hotel just around the corner from the Bronte house. Since we arrived in the late afternoon, the tours were over for the day, but we had a long, light evening (July) so we walked on the moors up above the house. Then we toured the house the next day and stumbled down the main street of old Haworth.

I also recommend St. Ives in Cornwall (location of Virginia Woolf's Lighthouse) and Bath (location of lots of novels).

But if you never get out of London, there is lots to see there, including Samuel Johnson's and Carlyle's houses. Also, if you go in August, you can tour Buckingham Palace. Sign up for some of the walking tours of various areas, including Greenwich and Hampstead. Go to the British Museum, where they have restored the old reading room. You can see where Karl Marx sat to write Das Kapital.

When are you looking at visiting and how long would you be staying?

Do you like cities or countryside?

What sort of transport – if any – will you have?
 
Duh! I suppose I should have mentioned I live in Britain.:cool:

I've lived in London but haven't seen all of it. I love cities and fantastic views. I shall be driving - due to my nicotine addiction.

I don't like the Lake District. Never been to the Cotswolds, Bath, Devon or Cornwall.

I love York and Edinburgh. Haven't seen much else.
 
I would head for Land's End in Cornwall, try for a view of Tintagel and roam around Wales a good bit. Devon has some pretty coastline. East Anglia probably does too. Maybe search out some Roman ruins here and there?

I heard there's a service where you can ride piggy back on a duchess across Europe
 
I've been to Glasgow Stewart. Didn't like it. Aberdeen's a long way away, are you sure it's worth it?

Driving through Wales and then on to the south west sounds favourite at the moment.
 
Did you truly go to Glasgow? Did you see the world's tallest cinema (specifically built to be a cinema)? Did you go to the parks there? Did you see a stabbing (Glasgow is supposedly the stab capital of the world)? Did you see any NEDs (Non-educated delinquents)? Other than that, Greenock and Gourock are short train rides away. Cheap and absolutely beautiful. If you have a car, they're even closer. I highly suggest Greenock and Gourock. I believe Gourock is sometimes called the gate to the highlands.
