Are Oasis the best band of the last 30 years

Well? They clearly are. Forget Nirvana, they made good music, but their impact was negative. Kids shouldn't listen to songs like I hate myself and wanna die. Live Forever is my favourite song. One of the best song.

Are Oasis the best band of the last 30 years?
Quite simply, no. Knowing one chord more than Status Quo and practically being a Beatles tribute act doesn't make you a good band.

Definitely Maybe, when it came out, was a great album. It's probably one of the best debut albums, along with, say, Counting Crows' August And Everything After and Rage Against The Machine's Rage Against The Machine.

I would like to think that Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds are better, given that their musical style is accomplished, varied, and they have an impressive longetivity that has survived with the fluidity of the band.

They're OK. Certainly not the best but pretty damn good. Like Stewart said, Rage Against the Machine's debut was better and certainly holds up 15 years later.

Pretty much what Stewart said. Oasis' first two albums are good, even occasionally great, but if that's the best music you've heard in 30 years you can't have been listening to much.

No.

I like Oasis – What's the Story? remains a favourite album. But no.

They weren't even the best Brit pop band from that era. Blur were musically far more adventurous, while Pulp's Different Class is the stand-out album of that time and musical genre.

I'm half-tempted to put together a list of the best bands of the last 30 years now... hmmm...

It would be really interesting, actually.

How many genres and sub-genres would you include or would it all be rock? ;)

Let's see, since 1978? My personal list would probably be a lot of white guys with guitars, yes, but... hmmm... Oh, we'll see.

Yeah, because THAT'S something that just takes 5 minutes.

Gimme the weekend. Something like that needs youtube links and shit.

I am looking forward to it. :)

Now, it's easy enough to say Bob Dylan is going to be on the list but the real fun comes when you can only pick one song to post up here.

It said "bands". Dylan isn't a band. And The Band broke up in 1978, fittingly enough. I'd have to do a second one for solo acts.

Oasis have never been about complex music and complex chords. Noel has said it many times, it is about simple music, generally for simple fans. I'm inclined to agree with Noel there. However, it's that simplicity that is so impressive. They came out with Definitely Maybe and used a heavy guitar sound. And then they released Live Forever, that song well and truly defined the ninties. Their songs are simple, and get to the point. No complicated, rubbish that nobody should have too deal with.

I'm feeling supesonic, give me gin and tonic, you can have it all but how much do you want it?

Maybe i dont really wanna know how your garden grows, cause i just wanna fly.

Maybe i will never be all the things that i wanna be, now is not the time to cry, nows the time to find out why.

Made a meal and threw it up on sunday, i've got a lot of things to learn.

And by Christ their B-sides are so good. Their is a goldmine full of Oasis songs that people just need to find. I would give a prospective fan The Masterplan and if they aren't swayed then they probably watch to much Mtv.

I don't know that Nirvana's impact was any more negative than Oasis's, nor any other band for that matter. Likewise it would be hard to quantify their positive impact. Oasis probably enjoys much greater popularity in Europe than in the U.S. where they have been marginal at best for many years.

Songs like I Hate Myself and Want To Die have a very negative impact. Live Forever, and all of Definitely Maybe are about the good things in life.
