Which films or books have challenged the way you think?

I thought the dilemma in the movie Gone Baby Gone was really tough. I won't spoil it if you have not seen it but it would be a pretty damn difficult choice to make.

I think I lean towards the decision that is made by C. Affleck in the movie.
 
I read 'The End of Faith' by Sam Harris.

If you're a strong believer in religion, it'll make you question your faith.
If you're a questionable believer, you'll be turned into an atheist.
If you're an atheist, you'll realize you've been right all this time.

That is definitely an excellent book, no doubt about it. It will be one that sells big for years to come and have a wide influence.
 
I just hope there ARE years to come. According to Harris' book it's only a matter of time before a group of fanatics get a hold of a nuclear weapon and use it.

Dancer in the dark - its a musical which i usually hate but the main person is Bjork who i love. about a mom trying to raise money for her sons eye operation and gets accused for murder.possibly the saddest movie ever i thought.

Like others, I found Guns Germs and Steel to be very thought-provoking. I also remember that the short book Via Dolorosa by David Hare had a great impact on me from the point of view that I'd always hoped there could be a peaceful solution in the Middle East and that book pretty much showed that there couldn't. Also, End of Days by Gershom Gorenberg was rather an eye opener.

I think two things that have affected me the most in recent years are newspaper articles rather than books; these two articles by Richard Dawkins turned me from being a tolerant nontheist into a much more intolerant one.

I couldn't get through the first chapter of Blindness, probably for the same reason I couldn't get through Kafka's The Trial.

I love The Bell Jar. A movie version is supposed to come out.

In terms of movies that I've seen that had any real impact on me, it'd probably be What the [Bleep] Do We Know?

Interesting movie. From the hype I heard about it, I was hoping that it would play off the final chapter of The Dilbert Future but was surprised when it was more about quantum physics than the power of thought.
