I've been accused of plagiarism. Justified or not?

I decided to submit a poem for another website, choosing to combine three other poems I've already written on this website.

One titled : ipoem
Those that recieve submissions accused me of plagiarism.
The opening line of " ipoem " is similar to Lord Byron.

She walks in beauty, like the night

She walks in silence by the night

Is it plagiarism? I don't think so.

Plagiarized Writing in whatever form has to at least exactly match word for word, sentence for sentence, paragraph for paragaraph, page for page.

It can't be just one opening line which is all the recievers had a problem with.

Plagiarism is the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work.

No I don't think it's plagiarism. I mean the two sentences are totaly different! only "she walks in" and "the night"
Anyone could have used that. So unless you knew that poem and did it on purpose, and even then I wouldn't say it's plagiarism.
 
She crawls through puddles like a drunk.

She talks in riddles like a sprite.

She walks and wiggles like a string.

Yours? Well . . . .:confused:
 
It's not plagiarism, but it's not exactly creative, either.

Now, wouldn't you rather be more creative? :whistling:
 
If that one line is the only thing somewhat like the line from Byron's poem, I would say no.
But here's a link to definitions of plagiarism. Do you agree with them?
 
I understand both sentences completely different from each other so no, I wouldn't think it is plariarism at all but then, I don't know anything about plagiarism at all. :confused:

The poems I enter on other websites I basically choose to mix and match; or make up a new title altogether.

That's far different than stealing from Lord Byron or any other famous work.
 
If you publish a poem on one website, and they hold the rights to it, and you publish all or part of that same poem elsewhere, then you would be breaking copyright laws. It's impossible to plagiarize one's own work.
