Hi there,

Im hoping you experts can help me.

Im looking for a book that explains about all major wars and why they went to war etc.

Is there a type of encyclophedia or anything out there you could reccomend???

Im in the UK,

Many thanks in advance,

Chris.

I very much doubt if there is a good single work on this topic since there are many divergent views about why wars happen.

There is "An Encyclopaedia of Wars", but it is enormously expensive so you would be best to borrow it from your local library [if they will lend it].

That's a tall order.

The closest thing I can think of is this:

The Oxford Companion to Military History

I own this book and while it's not terribly detailed, I believe it is what you are looking for or at the very least is a starting point.

If you are just looking for 20th Century/Modern wars, there are much better books out there.

Yes I think a history of war in general is a bit of an unlikely project - barring reference works like the encylopedias - but there are some very interesting wider histories of war. Any in particular you might like to focus on?

There is actually a book entitled - major things that happen in the 20th century. I'll go into work (I work in a library) and will find out for you
