Any books on Race and Business/Economics?

Hi,

I'm an Economics major with career interests in both Business and the social sector, and I'm enrolled in an African American History course this semester.

For our final paper due in December, our professor has given us a pretty unique assignment. He is asking us to pick two books that relate to both our college major (for me, Econ), and what we are studying in class (American racial struggle and history), and then to write a comparitive paper on the books.

The goal is to have us take away something from this history course that will benefit us in our primary area of study.

So I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for books that I should read to complete this assignment. If you know of a good book that deals with contemporary or classic race issues which somehow connects them with Business, Economics, Economic Development, etc. then I'd love to hear about it!

Also, if you have any suggestions for a good book I might want to read in general as an Econ major please feel free to share!

I have not read this book myself, but I remember the story about it.

I think this one is ideal. The Sneetches by Dr Seuss. Deals with race (through the allegory of some Sneetches having stars on their bellies and some not) and economics (a businessman takes the Sneetches for all their money in their quest for social superiority).

Tally's Corner

If you can get your hands on a copy of a book called "Tally's Corner : A study of Negro Streetcorner men" you will have hit pay dirt. I have an old printing, and I have no idea how big the run was or how the book was received at the time it was written, or if you could even get a copy.
It was written by an anthropologist who lived in an impoverished black community and chronicled all sorts of activites, events and economic and social situations. Reasons for certain behaviors are given without judgment or prejudice. It is not an opinion piece. The author keeps everything pretty clinical. That said it still manages to have a little bit of heart. Check it out if you get the chance.
Also, "Man Child in The Promised Land" by Claude Brown is probably the greatest piece of non-fiction writing I have ever read. Lots of socio-economic meat in that book.
