Favorite female singers

I just tripped over this post. Late to the party as usual.:)

I recently caught Divas on VH1, not a show I would normally be drawn to but I did really enjoy the duet with Adele and India Eyrie (sp?). I love both of their voices and together they were fabulous. I've never heard of Adele before. I'm guessing she's new on the scene. Really, really lovely singers.

I think my favorite female singers have got to be:
-Alanis Morrissette
-Nora Jones
-Sherly Crow

I listen to Alanis Morrissette's album, Jagged Little Pill, constantly

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Katie Melua. I guess she hasn't really caught on here yet, but is quite big in the UK.

I simply love Katie Melua, strong voice, original lyrics and just the right music
Favourite songs: "Spider's Web","If You Were a Sailboat", "Nine Million Bicycles" and "The Closest Thing to Crazy" ...hmmm in fact I love all of her songs lol she's good!!!

She also does a great job with folk/blues songs. If you search YouTube you can find some covers which are outstanding (not that her original work is not outstanding). A very mature & unique voice for someone her age.

My favourite female singers from Ukraine:
Ani Lorac
Iryna Bilyk
Sofia Rotaru

My favourite female international singers:
Shakira
Madonna

Joan Baez for me will always be number One!
After her, some other favorites
Judy Collins
Melissa Etheridge
EmmyLou Harris
Nanci Griffith

Cris Williamson-sometimes I think if I were on a desert island and could have only 1 album, it would be her The Changer and the Changed.(unless it was anything by Baez)

amomg the younger ones- Avril Lavigne, her feistiness reminds me of Molly Bolt from Rita Mae Brown's first book Rubyfruit Jungle.

Annie Clark (St Vincent)
