Books that take place near the sea/on a coast

i'm looking for something atmospheric and descriptive, plotlines should preferably take place near the ocean or the sea coast

Does it have to revolve around the water and shoreline or can it just be set there?

The Eye of the Needle by Ken Follett seems like the kind of story you are describing. Also The Beach by Alex Garland and many stories by Joseph Conrad. I could also include maybe Jaws and Robinson Crusoe.

Those that I've read and can remember:

Being Dead - Jim Crace
The Island - Peter Benchley
Cannery Row or The Pearl - John Steinbeck (probably most of Steinbeck's novels would qualify)

The Sea by John Banville

The French Lieutenant's Woman by John Fowles

The Lover by Marguerite Duras

On the Beach
by Nevil Shute

and don't forget there's a sequel to Cannery Row called Sweet Thursday

there are many novels set on or around the sea.....

Lord Jim - Joseph Conrad, he wrote alot about the sea

Kidnapped and Treasure Island are sea adventures by Robert Louis Stevenson

Sailing alone around the world - Joshua Slocum, a 19th Century book account of sailing alone around the world

Jack London-- Sea Wolf

Ernest Hemmingway-- 'The Garden of Eden'

Jules Verne --The Mysterious Island and 20,000 Leagues Beneath the Sea

Aldous Huxley's 'Island'

Rites of Passage which is sometimes called Sea Trilogy by William Golding - this was originally 3 different books, the last being called Rites of Passage, it's now sold as one book. It won the Booker Prize in 1980

Nathaniel Philbrick -- In The Heart Of The Sea

Michael Chreighton wrote Pirate Latitudes. a story about pirates in the 1700's

I didn't know that about Cannery Row. Island is of course set on an island, but the ideological storyline is what I remember about that book much more so than its setting. Good book, I thought.

Two more to add:

Herman Melville
Patrick O'Brian

It's a moldy oldy, but how about Dion Fortune's The Sea Priestess?

Or almost any H.P. Lovecraft?

Stephen King's Duma Key was pretty good, too.

Duma Key is good, I'm reading it right now.

The Sea, The Sea is one of Iris Murdoch's best, in my opinion.

I've also wanted to check out The Sea Road: A Novel by Margaret Elphinstone.

And of course Gift From the Sea by Ann Morrow Lindbergh, but it's not fiction. And I just realized I'm being very obvious with my suggestions - they all have "sea" in the title! :D

Duma Key by Stephen King is one of my favorite novels of all time, takes place on the Florida coast and has great atmosphere.

Plots on a coast

Hello, I just finished reading a marvelous book by Margaret Langstaff. It takes place in Florida in a seaside town, with boat action, lovely characters, and a few twist and turns that were totally unexpected. The book is Marlin, Darlin': Garnet Sullivan Live from Florida #1. I truly do recommend it for a real sense of the warm sand and foamy surf, and no t to forget the sea-oats:D and saw-grass!
