Moving in with someone: who's doing the moving?

So, you're a dude or dudette and you've finally found someone who most likely won't drive you crazy in the next 6-36 months. You decide to shack up together, as it the way of the 21st Century. But wait a minute: you like where you are living and your partner also happens to be rather fond of their current accommodations.

What do you do?

Not so much an issue for the young 'uns that rent an apartment and can put all of their worldly possessions into an Outback, flipping a coin will suffice; loser gets to move.

It's even worse if you and your partner live more than three hours away -- someone is going to have to change jobs.

Who moves? Does the person who makes the most money stay put and the other person go to them? Does the person with the higher property value get to be the one to clear out the guest room to make room for your studio/study/home office?

Who pays for the move?

Does the mover have a contingency plan in case things turn sour?

I'll go first: she came to me because I made more, I work in a niche field, she'd have an easier time finding a job that I would, and my place was awesome, even though the city I lived in wasn't as cool as hers by several orders of magnitude. I paid for the move because I am a gentleman like that.

I don't think property value has anything to do with it. Though I'd think it sensible to pick the best house whenever possible.
The man? Together? I don't know.
I don't think you should move if you don't know if the relationship will last.

Having answered all your questions, this would be a good time for me to say I've never been in that situation. I'd like to hear from those who have though. :)

... you and your partner live more than three hours away ...
In my opinion this is the only way at all a relationship can work and last, so there is no need to answer further questions... ;)

Sorry, and best regards from a hermit's way of looking at life :)

That's Plan B.
