Osama bin Laden is dead!

BTW, the commandos seized a lot of computer equipment. The relationship between Pakistan and the US is going to be strained once that info starts coming out. We are going to see that the Pakistan military and governmnent have been complicit in hiding UBL. Not like it wasn't already common knowledge, but now it's on a hard drive in an office of the CIA.

I was thinking this as well.

It will be interesting to see the reactions of the Pakistani government and people in the upcoming days and weeks.

If anybody here reads the Pakistani newspapers, I would appreciate them reporting in here on any govt officials or military officers who have stopped showing up to work. If you know that your name is on Osama's hardrive, you are beating a fast retreat right now.

Just a muse - what if Pevez Mushareff's name is on there...... Just thinking out loud.....

I am curious as to the diplomatic fallout regarding an American military operation conducted within Pakistan's borders without their prior knowledge.

It probably is but in what capacity remains to be seen. Or not seen.

As a current expat, I wonder if I should be exercising any special caution.

The State Department seems to think so:

Travel Alert
U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Bureau of Consular Affairs

Worldwide
May 01, 2011

The U.S. Department of State alerts U.S. citizens traveling and residing abroad to the enhanced potential for anti-American violence given recent counter-terrorism activity in Pakistan. Given the uncertainty and volatility of the current situation, U.S. citizens in areas where recent events could cause anti-American violence are strongly urged to limit their travel outside of their homes and hotels and avoid mass gatherings and demonstrations. U.S. citizens should stay current with media coverage of local events and be aware of their surroundings at all times. This Travel Alert expires August 1, 2011.

U.S. Embassy operations in affected areas will continue to the extent possible under the constraints of any evolving security situation. U.S. government facilities worldwide remain at a heightened state of alert. These facilities may temporarily close or periodically suspend public services to assess their security posture. In those instances, U.S. Embassies and Consulates will make every effort to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens. U.S. citizens abroad are urged to monitor the local news and maintain contact with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

Media coverage of local events may cause family and friends to become concerned for their loved ones traveling and residing abroad. We urge U.S. citizens to keep in regular contact with family and friends. U.S. citizens living or traveling abroad are encouraged to enroll in the Department of State's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), to receive the latest travel updates and information and to obtain updated information on travel and security issues. U.S. citizens without Internet access may register directly with the appropriate U.S. Embassy or Consulate. By enrolling, U.S. citizens make it easier for the U.S. Embassy or Consulate to contact them in case of emergency.

Travel information is also available at travel.state.gov. Up-to-date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the United States and Canada or, for callers outside the United States and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444.

For information on "What the Department of State Can and Can't Do in a Crisis," please visit the Bureau of Consular Affairs’ website at travel.state.gov. For further information on specific countries, U.S. citizens should consult the Country Specific Information pages, Travel Alerts, and Travel Warnings, as well as the Worldwide Caution. Follow us on Twitter and the Bureau of Consular Affairs’ page on Facebook as well.

When the Pakistanis lodge their complaint they will be answered with embarrasing information found on the hard drive.

I wanted to see if the Department of Homeland Security changed the threat level from Orange to Red and learned that they got rid of thee color code system. When did that happen? Anyhoo, the DHS has not released any advisories or warnings so I guess you're no more likely to get blown up flying than you were last week. Good news.

So let me get this straight: they buried Bin Laden at sea, where he'll mix with BP's oil spills and radiation from Fukushima.

Can you say "radioactive terrorist zombie"?

I have been reassured by my Muslim colleague that sits across from me that he will not kill me in revenge. Take that, State Department!

Why did they do this burial at sea?

to make a statement against radical islamic beliefs they should have fed Bin Laden's corpse to a herd of wild pigs.

oh and televised it globally

Had to within 24 hours as per Islamic custom and no country would be willing to take his corpse apparently.

One good reason to bury him at sea was to prevent his followers from creating a shrine over his bones. By treating his remains with dignity, they actually sent a positive message to people of ALL faiths..

Exactly. Not respecting basic religious rites would send a pretty loud message to non-radical muslims that just maybe Bin Laden was right when he said the US is an enemy of islam as a whole. No need to make him even more of a martyr.

Sounds like a good way to cause senseless anti-American violence if you ask me. I'm glad America took the high ground on this one.
