A boy leaves his home to live in a sequoia forest

My wife has challenged me to find the title of a book she read before we were married (We celebrate our fortieth in July) and she gave me very little to go on. The first thing I know for sure is that the publishing date is previous to 1971, the meager details she gave me are as follows: A troubled young man runs away from home and ends up in a forest which is populated with sequoia trees or possibly one of the other species of giant trees. If you think you recognize this story and would like to provide any additional details, we would love to hear from you.

Thanks,
Ed J.

The only thing that comes to my mind is Gene Stratton-Porter's Freckles, which I'm reading right now. It fits your description, more or less.

Thanks

I really appreciate hearing from someone about my post, but I'm afraid that is not the book we are looking for. Thank you again.

I thought this was it!

I printed out a description of the story, and showed it to my wife, confident that I had solved the mystery. She told me no dice, and gave me a piece of information previously unrevealed. The teen boy in the book that she read did not live in a tree or have any animal companions. Thanks for posting!
