A matter of discussing the book "The Lord of the Rings"

Hi guys,

I'm from Denmark and I'm very much interested to hear your opinions about the book "The Lord of the Rings" by no-other than J. R. R. Tolkien.
(Might have to add that I'm 17 years old, therefore is my English not perfectly)..

Do you consider it being a fairly and well-written book?

Some of my friends, who have read it on Danish, say that it's a very boring book, because Tolkien puts too many details into it and it ruins the plot/history a bit. But what do you think of it?
I really want some of your opinion; for is it a good book, or is it too much - you know -boring?

And by the way, is it true that the language Tolkien use is very old English and not modern English? For I really want to read a great book that have a bit modern English in it and still are well-written!
- Could you perhaps give me a list of some great books that meet these requirements, please?

.. As a matter of fact, I've read the Harry Potter books, and I think they are quite good, however, they are also simply written, am I right??

Well, I'll like to hear your opinions of the books by J. R. R. Tolkien and a list of books you find well-written and still with modern language in it, please.

Hi Frederik, welcome to BAR.

LoTR was written in more or less "modern" English and your friends are not the first to say that Tolkien put too much detail into the books. Some people love the series because of the detail that others hate it for. Personally I like it because it makes his world come alive.

I think it is a great series even though it does get bogged down sometimes.

You're right: the Harry Potter books are written more simply than Lord of the Rings.

Well, Lord of the Rings is a great story! I've seen the films, but not read the books, yet, however, I'll might give it a chance! ;-)

And, yes, the Harry Potter books are very easy to read ! But do you know any books that are very well-written and have a modern language, beside Lord of the rings?
