DVD Review: City of God

City of God

I've been hearing out this movie for a long time, and since it got released this week on dvd i finally got the chance to purchase it. The film is set in Rio de Janeiro and centers around the street gangs in 'The City of God'. It begins early on in the lives of the characters, where they are then introduced to the world of death and violence from the older children. It's from here that you're taken on one hell of a journey. There's a lot that I want to say about this movie but don't want to because i'm afraid I'd spoil something. I will say that you will be glued to the screen until the end of the movie. The most amazing thing about this film is that it's based on a true story. I didn't know this before i watched it, but during the ending credits they show pictures and an interview of the people this movie was made about. I watch a ton of movies and i can still honestly say this is one of the best i've ever seen, five star all the way.

Acting - amazing
Cinematography - amazing
Story - amazing

Basically everything about this movie is amazing. It's a great film and a very important one to watch. Remember, this is in Portugese so you'll have to read subtitiles. Although i'm pretty sure nobody around here has a problem reading lol. Also included in the special features is a great documentary about the subject of this movie. When people think of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil they usually think about it's beaches and sightseeing, but away from the resorts and five star hotels is a war going on in the streets everyday. It's a good watch, and i'm glad they included it with the movie.

so...yeah, watch the movie.

score: 10/10

not really a spoiler, but if anyone has seen it, my god Lil' Ze was nuts. the way he laughed after he killed his first person as a child was a disturbing visual. wild.

I've had it on DVD for almost a year and it is certainly an excellent film. The acting is superb for such a group of young people and - like some of the best films - I would doubt that these kids had any acting experience prior to the making of this film.

in your version of the dvd what else is on it? i almost went ahead and ordered another version, but when i saw it was going to be released in the states again i decided to wait.

I saw this only once, and I was blown away - gripping stuff. I wished I'd seen it at the cinema.

Cheers, Martin

Dunno, must have loaned it out as I can't find it.

I'm not fussed about extras anyway - just an additional promotion of the movie afterall. I bought it for the movie as I do with all other DVDs. The extras are typically extra promotional guff of complete irrelevance (e.g. Lord of the Rings & Extended Editions)

I beg to differ - the extended versions of the LotR-films are much better that she theatrical releases.

So, City of God?

Cheers, Martin

I can't remember what extras were on it - probably a promotional trailer for some other film and a making of.

As for Lord of the Rings - I was referring to the extras on the Extended Edition with all the how we made helmets guff as a promotional tool to capitalise on the pockets of acne ridden bespectacles stereotypes who enjoy RPGing too much.

i agree that extras are usually pointless, but i always enjoy when there's something added to the disc that gaves me a bit more insight into the film. i really enjoyed the documentary that was packaged in with City of God a lot.
