Christophe Hitchens diagnosed with esophageal cancer

Here is his latest interview - with CBS:

Outspoken and outrageous: Christopher Hitchens - 60 Minutes - CBS News

I have to admit I know little of him, have read very little of his writing, but it's plain to se he is regarded as an intellectual giant among intellectuals.

I've always wondered how I would feel if I were in the presence of someone like him. I would be so self concious that I would wonder if I was the butt of a joke he had just told that my smaller intellect didn't get. I'd worry that no matter what I said, it would at least bore him if not disgust him with my mediocre simplicity.

A few months ago in an interview on NPR he called himself an "insufferable cancer snob". It's his sense of humor that stands out most for me.

He was a brilliant writer who wrote about politics, war and religion. He was also one of the best debaters I have ever seen, who could deal "lethal" blows with a turn of a phrase.

I agreed with most of what he said about religion. And I disagreed with most of what he said about politics. But even when I disagreed with him, the brilliance with which he formulated his arguments forced me to think long and hard about my own beliefs and positions.

He made me think. For that I will always remember him.
