Hey, don't put words in my mouth. Love poetry. Hate Milton. Hate him to such as extent that he must have wronged my in a past life.
 
Did you by any chance have to study Milton at school, Ashlea? All that over-analysing is enough to put anyone off! :) We had to do Pope's "The Rape of the Lock" for A level - an "epic" poem about someone having a lock of hair cut off. Give me strength! :rolleyes: Apparently it was all very important - to me it was just dull and a complete over-reaction! Perhaps poetry isn't my thing! :D

I had to study many, many things at school which I still like, and Milton just didn't measure up. I would say that it was because it takes him so long to say something, but I like other equally verbose authors.

The only other author I hate this badly is James Feinmore Cooper. Oh, and I hate Lord Jim, but I like Conrad's other stuff.
 
Just got a new copy of Dune for my husband, as his was in horrible shape. I plan on reading this in the near future, as its his favorite book and I've not yet gotten to read it.

Also picked up Interesting Times by Pratchett. Seems to be quite a favorite and I've just not had time to read it yet. I'm sure to be reading this one soon, as well.
 
Just bought the Chronicles of Narnia (1 and 3) Collectors Edition and A Hatful of Sky (Terry Pratchet) for my daughter's birthday. Not very exciting I know, but hey! You asked! :D
 
I received Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, The Romance of the Rose, and The Rule of Four via Amazon yesterday.

I'll hopefully read them once I've finished The Secret History by Donna Tartt. :)
 
Are you enjoying The Secret History? I've heard so much about it, especially when it came out - but I still don't know what the friggin' book is about.

Any good?

Just got The Wedding by Nicholas Sparks... =) touching and I like it though A Walk to Remember is still my fave..
 
Started War and Peace a little over a week ago. My intense love for Russian writers has only been strengthened. I am a little over 600 pages in and find myself staying up half the night to read since it's the only time I have. I simply cannot get enough :)
 
I just bought a tale of two cities, the aeneid, and phases of gravity by dan simmons. but right now im reading johhny got his gun. its excellent.
 
Well Ottakars had a table full of cheap books (4 for £10) and when I looked at the back covers quite a lot of them were supposed to be £8-9. Bargain thought I. They're currently running a promotion on their list of 'Essential' reads. I've got the full list on a leaflet, and unfortunately all the ones I wanted weren't there. But t'is only a small shop, so I'll pop into the big one in town at lunch tomorrow.

Anyhoo, I got myself Casino Royale, Lolita and Love in the Time of Cholera. And I got Aunts Aren't Gentlemen for my boyfriend and he loves Jeeves and Wooster, and who can blame him?

I only went out for a loaf of bread. :eek:
 
I'm always taking myself off to Manchester (which is a fair old trek really) shopping for 'important things that I really need to buy' - and return with 7 new books instead.

I most recently bought Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Looking forward to getting round to it.
 
I just picked up:

A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Iriving. I've always wanted to read an Irving, so I just jumped in and picked one.

Around the World in 80 Days. I'm reading it again. Verne is one of my very favorite authors. :)

The Color of Magic. One of you mentioned that you were reading a Pratchett novel once and it made you giggle (sorry I don't remember who, but I think it was a girl). I've never read anything by him, so I decided to start at the beginning of the Discworld saga!

By the way, I've read An Instance of the Fingerpost and I loved it. Even though the fourth part of the book was hard to get through, it was well worth it. I haven't read any other Pears, so I don't know how it measures up to his others.

I believe it was me who giggled. If you don't like The Color of Magic, don't give up. I don't think its one of his better or funnier books. I suggest trying Guards! Guards! or Witches Abroad to give you a better sense of Pratchett. I think my favorite book of his is Reaper Man, which is about Death. Its hard not to love Death, and I love reading about him.
