Which Authors You Won't Read Again?

sheesh lol I went through a Koontz/King phase some years ago as well but I can't remember a single Koontz title of the top of my head. For some reason the King one's stuck a bit better.

Unfortunately that erosion is accelerating , exacerbated by the increasingly corrupt and ethically and morally bereft cadre resident inside the Beltway.

There will come a time ( and it's rapidly approaching) wherein what resides on your bookshelves may well get you incarcerated or worse.

A close friend of mine's son was recently suspended because he got caught with two books I gave him , keep in mind that he is an honors student who will be going to a certain prestigious West Coast university on a full ride poly-sci scholarship.

The "crime"? Subversive literature.

The books?..........R.M. Hare's " Freedom and Reason" and Thomas Paine's " Common Sense".........

Our alleged educational system has turned into more correctly an eduindoctrinational system. Geared towards producing march in lockstep drones rather than thinking members of society.

Find me a course in logic and/or critical thought below the advanced university levels nowadays.

would you post the name of the school that suspended the student with those two books please?

find me a course in the 3 R's that imparts the basic skills so that pupils are both literate and numerate to an adequate standard.

Slightly annoyed doesn't mean unwilling to read the book. I went through a big Koontz phase about twelve years ago. Intensity is hist best imho.

Why do I want to say that his wife was shot holding a child in the cabin? For some reason, I remember that particular incident.

I didn't mean to imply annoyance on your part.

As regards the second , the U.S marshals service initially shot Weaver's 14 year old son , yes the kid fired at them............after they shot his dog right in front of him , Kevin Harris and Sammy Weaver were drawn out of the cabin in the first place by a socalled " recon" team throwing rocks at the cabin to " test the dogs alertness".

You will note that Sammy Weaver was already shot through the arm and retreating , he was shot fatally *in the back* , the story put forth by the socalled " recon team" doesn't hold up , not even in law enforcement circles.

Harris did shoot Degan ( marshall) and kill him while returning fire.

Note , that any sort of recon team is supposed to *avoid* engagement if at all possible , provocation of engagement is against s.o.p.

Randy Weaver was shot , again in the back , by FBI HRT sniper Len Horiuchi while lifting the latch of a cabin to visit the body of his dead son , when Weaver ran for the house , along with his daughter Sarah and Kevin harris Horiuchi fired AT the house ( later claiming to be firing at Harris) at shot Vicki Weaver in the face while she was holding her ten month old daughter.

The latter shot being *directly* against the FBI's own written rules of engagement , and there was NO demand for surrender tendered.

We can go deep into the initial " charges" that brought all this about and why they were a load of male bovine excremental leavings in the first place.

Note that Harris was acquitted of ALL charges , including the killing of Degan , Weaver was acquitted of ALL charges except for missing the original court date and thus violating conditions of bail , more on why he missed the court date and the controversy about that particular issue if you wish , said acquittals *include* the original farcical charges that brought about the bail factor in the first place.

WHY?

Weaver refused to serve as an ATF informant , you do the math.

Nobody from the Marshall's service was indicted , nor was Horiuchi. But then nobody was indicted at Kent State either............and so it goes.

Steinbeck sets my teeth on edge. I've tried three different books. No dice.

The Grapes of Wrath is darn near biblical in meaning to me. I also enjoyed The moon is down which was one of his more unrecognized works. I would recommend it as it is a shorter read. Didn't think much of The winter of our discontent. Just couldn't get into it for anything.

I've actually made it through East of Eden, and as mentioned, started two others. Can't even remember which ones at this point in time. I'll allow for his talent, he just isn't my cuppa. :)

Hi Pontalba: Haven't read East of Eden but saw the movie and the only thing I remember about it was James Dean - I was a lot younger then and thought he was kinda hunky. So much for my literary appreciation.:)

LOL Canuck, yeah, he was a cutie, for sure.
The film only covered a section of the book. I'm not really sure if I've seen it or not! lol

Markus Zusak. Read The Book Thief, that was more than enough.

Jodi Picoult -haven't read any of hers, but husband's opinion rates very high with me, and he can't stand her writing. They are passed without even looking.

hmm book thief didn't get past the first page on the preview pages - looks like a load of muddled hooey

jodi picault read one or two - wont say they are awful to the point of avoiding them but didn't exactly grab me either.

you are braver than I am. Life is too short to force one's self to read ....(the proverbial substance that traditionally hits the fan) ;)
Sometimes it's worth it, simply to be absolutely sure something is as (unbelievably) bad as it seems to be.

Oh, another author I'd 99% not pick up again is Roberto Bolano. I read about half of 2666 and couldn't continue.
