I must say, the new look BAR isn't the most intuitive for finding things. And it's a little disconcerting looking down at "Similar Threads" to see threads and avatars I recognize from 2004!

When my manuscript was accepted, the publisher sent me a list of THINGS TO DO IMMEDIATELY. It mostly constituted activities designed to build up a web presence.
I procrastinated until after the book was released and then posted a self promotion thread on BAR.
I joined BAR for promoting my book. Period.
Why did I stay on? The writing challenges had me hooked. Once again, I'd never done anything like that before.
Why I will stay on. Not for the writing challenges; participation is too low to make the exercise fun.
Not to promote my books; most books are for middle readers and BAR is not the best place to advertise them.
Not to discuss books; I've put my reading on hold and also, I react rather emotionally to what I read which does not help in discussions.
I'll hang around because I like reading the very active discussions on BAR. I remember that debate ( actually stronger word needed) about Evolution. It was so stormy that I posted a few verses in 'Whenever It Gets Verse'. The participants were naturally too busy with their arguments to take notice.
I'll stick around for posts like Stigmaticman's that give details about poetry writing.
I know there should be other reasons too but it's mainly the posts and the easy navigability.

naah lol debate works fine for me ... stronger is only needed when folks start frothing at the mouth :)

Oh come on, I can't be the only person on here who holds forth from an emotional reaction to what I read. We are emotional beings after all. It can't all be intellectual objectivity.

I found this forum after being disappointed about a previous group. It seemed like more a social network than people who were actually into reading books. It also had trolls who were more interested in posting count than having any idea what they were talking about. And yes, for those of us with sometimes bitter wit...some individuals do take offense. I just love books, bullies and a good laugh...life's too short to flame complete strangers over middling topics.
 
Well lets hope your experience here is a lot better. Apart from anything else we do actually all read :D
 
I never really thought about it. I guess I joined because I like reading and there's a shameless promo part that I can spam you all with talks of my own writings...but moreso because I learned to type on a movie forum that had a huge star wars section...and this was a natural leap from there.

Aside: I also just like airing my opinion o_O

seriously: I read in a lot of genres and I keep a list of the books I read, so I can offer suggestions in a wide range of genres...my opinion of course, but hopefully at least one person finds it useful.
 
My problem with the Book of the Month section is the lack of discipline to read the books y'all select in a timely manner. That's my problem with book clubs in general...

but yes, you may interest me in that section...I will peruse it more and see if there's a month I can participate in :p
