Mind reading?

The super power thread got me thinking. Would you want the power to read other peoples minds? To be able to know exactly what they think about at any given time? What they think about you? What they think about your spouse or your kids? To know if they would steal from you? Or anything else?

Discuss pros and cons!

I don't think I'd want to know what other people are thinking non-stop, it would drive me slightly mad. If it'd be something I can turn on or off at will though….

It would ruin the surprise when the other half is buying me presents or planning things. Plus it would make life rather more boring as I'd know how people will react to something in advance. Not sure if I'd like that.

I was thinking Good Grief NO! We all have those thoughts that we don't voice for good reason - imagine if some one could 'hear' your unfiltered thoughts? How unnecessarily hurtful it would be? We can't stop the thoughts that arise but we do control what comes out of our mouth. We don't say everything we think because well we think things that would be nasty unflattering mean and entirely unproductive if we actually let them come out of our mouths. I mean who hasn't thought 'wow that person is fat' on seeing an overweight person? In a sense it is a natural expression of your impression, but you jolly well don't say it! And it would be really unfair if some one could 'hear' that thought because you can't control your unbidden thoughts. Having a thought is neither here nor there, it's what you do with it that counts.

I agree about having to be able to be selective about it to be good. Otherwise there would be too much noise to filter out. But wouldn't it be soooo cool to be able to know what people really think of you without them knowing? On the other hand, it might be depressing....

I think that if it were possible a new set of rules for polite society would evolve, one of which undoubtedly would be along the lines of it's rude to intrude.
