Turn of the Century Literature

I'm looking for accurate, informative books (fiction or non-fiction welcome) that portray everyday life, culture and attitudes of 1880-1920. Particularly I am also looking for books describing people's experience with adversity and how they and the people around them respond to their "differences". I'd like something more off the beaten path of the "classics".
Well-researched historical fiction is acceptable too.
Looking forward to seeing some recs :)

Fiction
Charles Dickens wrote a lot about people's adversity (Hard Times, The Old Curiosity Shop, Nicholas Nickleby etc.), though you did say you wanted to get away from the classics.

H. G. Wells, as well as writing science fiction, also wrote social novels, such as Kipps, which is a rags-to-riches story set in the early 1900s.

E. M. Forster- Howards End

Dornford Yates- although he may fall into the trap of being too much like P. G. Wodehouse!

G. K. Chesterton, although he lapses into the allegorical.

I can't think of any non-fiction- sorry!
