E.B. White: Charlotte's Web

Indeed I remember this book - and the cartoon they made of it too. I loved it as a kid and have been tempted on occasion to buy it again. It certainly ranked up there as one of my faves - I thought Charlotte was a wonderful character.

Oh I hated the book! I hated it because Charlotte was a spider, the main character was a pig, and Charlotte died in the end.

Looking back at it, it was a good book, it just went against everything I expected in a book. I've learned a lot since then.

E.B.White is one of the great American writers of the 20th century, IMO, especially his essays. Though when I was young The Trumpet of the Swan (about Louis the jazz trumpeter mute swan) was my favorite book.

I think Charlotte's Web is sweet but doesn't fairly represent White for what he was, when he wrote every week for The New Yorker. Book rec: One Man's Meat, a collection of his essays.

I detested this book...detested it. I suppose I would have only disliked it if I hadn't been forced to read it so many times. I read it of my own accord if first grade, and didn't like it, then was forced to read it again in second grade (with a teacher I detested, but that's a different story), was forced to read it in third grade for a placement test, and in fourth grade, as part of working with the second graders, was forced to read it yet again and do a "Reader's Theatre Production" of it (this last one was due to a change in curriculum resulting in the second and fourth grade classes I was in working on the same book, at different levels of course). Ugh. I want to vomit with rage just thinking of it.

This book taught me an important lesson when it comes to books. I thought that all books were happy and perfect, and this one wasn't. I remember a teacher reading "A Taste of Blackberries" by Doris Buchanan Smith to us, and when the one kid died I just couldn't believe it. I had an argument with a friend because I thought it was some rule that sad things don't happen in books.

Looking back, Charlotte's Web is a good book, but I hated it at the time because I really had no idea what a book was.

I hate the book!! becasue it's my text book when I was S2.
and I got a very low mark in my Eng. Lit. exam!!

but if I have a chance to read it again i think i would love it, or simply like it.

Oh wow, I haven't thought about this book in ages. I had to read it in primary school, but I think I liked it anyway. :p I would like to re-read it as an adult to see what I think of it now.

i've never read it. i suppose my attention span went out the window by the first page.. i have read Stuart Little though..

I read it to my kids a few years ago and they all loved it. In fact, it occurs to me that it is time for a reread since I have some who were too young to enjoy it back then.
I have to agree with novella's assessment of E.B. White's status as one of the best. Great stuff.

I was going through some old books I store in plastic containers under my bed over the summer to see what I could part with since most of them were children or young adult level readings. I came across my worn copy of the book and was surprised because I thought I had given it to my brother's children years ago. ^^;; I've been getting the urge to read it lately.

I adore Charlotte's Web, it's one of my absolute favorites. Charlotte is the ONLY spider I have ever liked! I was gutted when I realized I'd misplaced my childhood copy and finally got around to buying a new one a couple of years ago. Definitely time for a reread I think!

I love "Charlotte's Web"! Great Book! Great Characters! Great Animals! Great Spider named Charlotte!
Who is your favorite Character, Animal or Charlotte The Spider?
