What book changed your life?

Yes, the similarities struck me as well.

Not very strange, considering Tolkien translated Beowulf once as well.

Cheers, Martin

I love A time for dancing it doesn't over describe anything, doesn't make it too complex but is raw and powerful and true. This book was truly something that changed my view on friendship and life.

This isn't the single book that changed my life but its one I'm re-reading at the moment and is the foremost in my mind at the moment.

would have to be Tom Sawyer for me. When I was a kid (10 or so) my mom would read to us under the tree in our backyard. She read a few books, but until she read us Tom Sawyer, I had no real interest in listening. It is true that Catcher In The Rye sparked my interest in reading, but Tom Sawyer sparked my interest in stories. It is the one good thing I learned from my mother. The book changed my life because without the appreciation of good stories, I might have wound up enjoying things like "Who Wants to Marry A Millionnaire"

the sirens of titan was a book I read back during my early years in high school. it immediately and singlehandedly altered my outlook on life, which prepared me for heavier stuff to come, like ulysses, a season in hell and gravity's rainbow.

The book that changed my life is "The Secret". Since I have discovered the Law of Attraction and practiced the power of positive thinking and visualization my life changed and I have achieved all my dreams.

The biography of Gustave Flaubert, and a book from a dutch writer called W.F Hermans (The dark room of Damocles) that got me reading when I was very young.

I wouldn't say changed my life, but has, four (common sense) guidelines to be a decent person, I have taken this books' material to use on my daily activities.

Probably Bukowski. I've stumbled upon him just a few years ago and was in awe. He's just so honest in his writing and he taught me, that there are worst things, than being alone.
