I have just discovered haruki murakami and i think i am in love with his style, his richly drawn characters, his atmosphere not to mention making my mind tick! - all a great formula for a great recipe. I just picked out one of his books at the library called 1q84. I don't know what attracted me to the book as sometimes a cover can do but my old friend Dasha read his books so i thought why not!?

Well now i am hooked, i am on page 200 on book one already. Only had it a couple of days or so! This guy can write! But have i made a mistake in reading one of his later novels first? I admit i went and bought 8 more of his books straight away and i don't normally do that with authors. I tend to like one or two by an author and find someone else but i have a feeling that i will love this guy!!!!!

Are there any other fans out there? or am i being too all knowing before i read the other books by him? After all i am only on page 200 of a novel he wrote ha ha!

Any other help will be appreciated and maybe some recommendations to similar styles? I must admit i kinnda love Japanese culture and would love to go there. x

Hello, Molko! I still haven't read any of Murakami's books yet, but they seem to get really good reviews. I've been curious about IQ84 since its re-release in 2011, so am looking forward to hearing your thoughts once you finish!

Hi,
I've read "kafka on the shore" by Murakami. It was weird. Yet it left a very lasting impression. More often than not, after I read a book, the very next day I forget all about it. But Murakami's story is still in my memory after 4 years or so. It means that it was really outstanding, strange, foreign, touching. Thanks for the post, it reminded me that I should read more of his books !

Funnily enough, something about Murakami's writing makes me really, really uncomfortable. I don't know what it is. A sense of the uncanny, perhaps.
I've read Norwegian Wood and quite a few of his short stories, and, just thinking about them, I can't shake that ominously uncanny feeling. Shudder.
Does anyone else feel this way?

Most Japanese literary works follow that uncomfortable mood.

I love Murakami, and I also started with 1Q84. I think it was probably a pretty good place to have started. The same year I read that, I read The Windup Bird Chronicle, which I liked quite a lot as well. That might be a good place to go next. Murakami is a genius!

I've read:

The Wind Up Bird Chronicle
Norwegian Wood
The Elephant Vanishes
The one he released last year....can't remember the name - the one about the Pilgrimage.

Love his stuff. Keep meaning to check out more of it - got IQ84 sat on my shelves currently.
