incest novels

Why the question???? Willing to exorcise for sthg in Egypt?
Is that possible? Sorry but asking on these kinds of enquiry and pretending they can be neutrally spoken about rather makes me sick.... As for books it seems to it has more to do either worsening the problem or, in the alternative, refer to a professional in the field of seexual abuse... Just curiosity I guess but what do you hope from this board by asking the question?

If you want some books see Yann Queffelec: Les Noces Barbares and La Femme Sous L'Horizon.

Hope you won't enjoy the reading and never buy them... Sometimes speaking abisively on issues makes them worse, and encourage the problems to grow up.

Difficult issue as far as there is a balance to install between discussing, denouncing and often unvoluntarily *normalise*..... Same water in movies: "Boys don't cry"...

Time to adapt Shakespeare, see the start of Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet : "'Norm', 'norm', I hate the word... "

Let's get abnormal and live...

It reminds me of that X-Files episode where the family had been inbreading since the Civil War - all those congenital abnormalities <shudder>

There probably are novels which "deal" with it in one way or another. I don't know of any. Not my kind of reading material.

What about "Girl, interrupted" tonight?
Sometimes I wonder what people really want when making or watching ever sad and disturbing stories. There must be a bit of exorcising in the exercise. Not sure it works though. Against what I thought am sometimes quite happy to come bacl to good oldie happy end 1950s Hollywood movies.

Girl Interrupted is an excellent movie, see it if you haven't already--it was my intro to that fine actress Angelina Jolie. I don't remember incest being part of it though?

The best place to find novels/works dealing with incest is likely to be from about 200 years ago when the topic was a major social issue. If I recall correctly, Moll Flanders by Daniel Defoe deals with the topic, though not as a central theme.

Anais Nin is a more modern author who wrote about incest--I don't remember in which works though, apart from "Incest" obviously. Also John Irving's Cider House Rules.

THAT'S the one that was made into a movie with Jody Foster.

The only incest I remember in "Cider House Rules" was the foreman raping his daughter. That was icky.
 
Are you talking about the movie Cider House Rules Alicia? I didn't see it, but I'd imagine the adult themes in the book would have been toned down considerably for general release. It's a long time since I read the book, but I'm fairly sure incest was one of the major themes in it.

Then again, I don't recall any in Hotel New Hampshire, so what do I know? Gotta stop losing those grey cells :)

They didn't cut the foreman's daughter story in the movie.

Books about the Borgia's perhaps? Also Anaïs Nin, as someone else already said. I know a couple of books that briefly touch upon the subject, but none as a central theme.
 
While it happens and people have to recover from it and all that, I can't really see it as a great topic for discussion. I'm a little surprised this thread has gone this far. Its one of those social issues thats there but you really wish wasn't. Nasty.
 
Can't remember if they were blood related

Fierce Invalids Home From Hot Climates by Tom Robbins may deal with incest.

The main character is enamored with his half-sister or cousin or something.

Maybe she's a stepsister.

Either way, it's taboo.

She's very young and he is middle aged.

As far as Robbins' books go, this is not the first I'd recommend.

Go for Skinny Legs and All. His best IMO.

No incest though.

I'm actually more than surprised that quite a few people seems so reluctant to talk about this subject. Why is it so very different from other "nasty subjects"?

Wouldn't say it is different, lies. If you've got this particular problem by all means get help--victim or perpetrator. But (IMHO) this is a book discussion web site not a support group. Again IMHO its not the kind of thing that lends itself to discussion in a forum like this, even though there might be some books out there about the topic.
 
Oh. If you look at it that way, yes. But isn't it the same thing as starting a thread about war books then, for instance? Just pick a subject and link books to it I mean. (I didn't get the idea this was someone looking for support though.)
 
True. I guess I didn't think about it that way. In spite of the original post in the thread it doesn't appear to be one of those topics--to me anyway--that you can be neutral about. Ah well...
