I read this growing up too - living in Nova Scotia it was considered mandatory!! Her Emily series (Emily of New Moon, Emily's Quest, and Emily Climbs) are excellent, as well as Pat of Silver Bush and Jane of Lantern Hill.

Charlotte's Web is a fave of mine, as well as Stuart Little. But I think E.B. White's best children's book is The Trumpet of the Swan.

My sister gave me the Laura Ingalls Wilder series. She would give me 2 for each holiday - 2 for my 6th birthday, 2 for Christmas, 2 at "grading" time, etc. I highly recommend them.

I also loved The Borrowers series by Mary Norton. I think originally they were library finds, as I found myself buying them again only a few years ago.

Hello all...

I love this thread... I spent many a summer (and many nights-instead of homework) reading of incredible far away places.

As a child I read many already mentioned: All the Little house books, Narnian Chronicles, Wizard of Oz and others in that universe, etc.

2 books I didn't see that really made an impact on me...

Madeline L'Engle's "A Wrinkle In Time" (I'm including A Wind in the Door and all the others as well)

Richard Adams "Watership Down"... this was by far the longest book I'd attempted (I was 8) and at times it was a struggle to get through it. Parts of it were scary and creepy but I was too fasinated to put it down! I've reread many times since then- it remains one of my favs!

If Harry Potter had been around in the 70's I probably would have been his biggest fan! LOL

Many personal favourites already quoted.I had forgotten about the Mary Plain books until I read the posting above.

Another series I really liked was the Mary Poppins books - she was much more abrasive than Julie Andrews in the film - funnier though.

Also, Roger Lancellyn Green wrote re-tellings of the Greek and Troy myths, Norse and Egyptian myths too. These could not have been bettered IMO.
 
I was reading before I started school at five. I remember a friend of my mother's giving me a huge bag of Enid Blyton's that her daughter had grown out of - I spent the next few months hooked on the Mallory Towers and Famous Five series!

Because I was mad on ponies as a girl, I also read every horsey story I could find, by people like the Pullein-Thompson sisters, Patricia Leitch and Elyne Mitchell. I also read Watership Down but I got very upset at the end and did not re-read it for years!

At school, I used to enjoy reading the Asterix books. They were excellent and the humour was actually quite advanced! :)
 
I use to love Roald Dahl's books! I remember Georges Marvellous Medicine was the first book I read by him. Then I got The Twits, Matilda, James and the Giant Peach...etc.etc.

I use to always read and re-read Enid Blyton's Faraway Tree Series too.
 
For me it was a Jules Verne novel- either:
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea or
A Journey to the Center of the Earth .

I can't remember which one. All I do remember is that I was knee high. :(

The first book I fell in love with was Jack London's The Call of the Wild.

I do love her books when I was young. Also I watched TV series of Anne of Green Gables. It was good programme.
 
I read Enid Blyton, obviously :p Also, the Narnia series and the Redwall series by Brian Jacques

The series that got me reading seriously was Hardy Boys - i have about 80 out of about a series of 87 that were published in the UK, even no. 13 which was never republished after the initial run (i presume for superstitious reasons) and so is hard to get hold of! :)
 
My favourites were Roald Dahl, my Aunty gave me Charlie and the Cocolate factory for my 9th birthday, I loved it and preceded to read every Roald Dahl I could find.
Matilda was probably my favourite I have read it countless times, followed by Henry Sugar and BOY.

As a younger child I loved The Berenstein Bears, and as someone mentioned on an earlier post I loved the Pick-a-Path books, so it could be different every time.
 
I don't actually have a favourite author growing up, I just seemed to have read so many. But it does seem that classic children's books seemed to be read more by adults than children.
 
Reading all your first books has brought back so many great memories! Thankyou. I started reading a little late in life but once I got started I couldn't read enough. My favourite book is Charlottes Web, I think mostly because it was the first book I truly undertook to read myself and didn't feel like it was some painful punishment, after that the Borrowers (I had totally forgotten about this series) and as a canadian anything by Lucy Montgomery.
 
Yeah, I do remember Charlottes Web, it was about a pig and spider. It was lovely story.

:p ah, I loved those, I think I still have some boxed away...
Beyond that, I loved reading Beatrix Potter, fairy tales, The Wind in The Willows, Swiss Family Robinson, The Jungle Book, but, I think Black Beauty was my favorite book for the longest time when I was little.
 
i guess i started reading when i was 7 or so. i used to take out literally 20 books from the public library - driving my mother and the librarian crazy.

I'm not certain of the age, but I remember Mike Mulligan and his steam shovel which I also have for my kids. I also remember Ferdinand the Bull which was my all time favorite. I remember that it came with a small record that required one of those weird dealies to make it run on the record player. I followed along and just loved hearing about the bull who preferred to smell the flowers.:D I also remember the How to sink a sub book, which was very popular year after year when I was in elementary school. We also had a black book series on NFL football teams and I remember reading about the Los Angeles Rams(now in St. Louis if that dates me) and the Denver Broncos. They were about ten to fifteen years outdated, but reading about the "orange crush" turned me into a Broncos fan overnight.
