Does anyone else read this guys novels? He's a young Australian author and his books are high speed action thrillers, great fun and very hectic!

He has written:

Contest (1996), republished recently

Ice Station (1998)

Temple (1999)

Area 7 (2001)

With another coming later this year (but only in Australia im afraid)

The novels are great! My only complaint is that sometimes verisimilitude is sacrificed for action.

Yes, his focus is action, action, action, but it is a delibarate decision on the part of the author, and makes them read more like a Hollywood action film than a book at times :p

Incidentally, his new book Scarecrow, which is the third in the Shane Schofield series (after Ice Station and Area 7) is out now in hardback (picked up on the weekend :) ) - yeah okay, i know i said it wasnt out this year but i was wrong, alright  :D

Good news! I have read all of his books and agree with your comments completely. Perfect when you dont' want to concentrate too much and just want a fast paced, page turning action book.

I would be interested in your review of the new one although i will have to wait for it to come out in paperback before I buy it!

Well im not allowed to read it yet because it was bought for my birthday  Rest assured, as soon as i have i'll probably come gabbing about it on here ;)

Well, ive finally got through Scarecrow, the third book in the Shame Schofield series - it was pretty good i felt, probably a little better than Area 7 though i still dont think he's back to his best (Ice Station and Temple). Still, a very enjoyable read, if you liked the previous ones then you'll get no complaints with this one.

Just a couple of notes, a very cool new chracter is introduced and plays an important role, although somewhat at the expense of returning characters (Gant, Mother, Book II).

Also
a major character is killed during the book, although im not going to say who as its best to read it for yourself first - personally i thought it a brave decision on the part of the author, it helps to move the characters along a little in their lives, and as he has confirmed there will be more Schofield books in the future it will be interesting to see how this story arc pans out!!

I've read
Contest (1996)
Ice Station (1998)
Temple (1999)
Area 7 (2001)

OK for a fast read but Area 7 pissed me off so much I doubt I'll read scarecrow. Unless I find it some where and I am desparate for something to read.
All Rielly does is create a situation with a fantastical (is that a real word?) escape, ala, Vin Diesel XXX style.
*groans as eyes roll up*

There is so much better action thrillers out there that are written in a better style with believeable events / situations / outcomes.

Check out Vince Flynn's 5 novels. There is no comparison due to the writing quality. http://www.vinceflynn.com/

WHAT!!! Which bit of Area 7 did you find unbelievable??

It was all very realistic ..... except perhaps surviving driving a Boeing down an aircraft elevator .... and making a connection with two Maghooks whilst falling down said elevator shaft .... and scaring off Komodo Dragons with a magnetic charge ... and breathing the air left over in the hose of a 40 year old gas station and it still being good ... and ... and ... okay i take your point :p

But they're still fun!!! :D

Phil

:D
Yep it was the maghooks in the end that got me.
When I read it I thought NO insert expletive WAY. The rest I could take as fantasy action, but that maghook scene. *cough* nah!

Matthew Reilly is publishing his new story, but its not a book, its being released FREE on the internet - part one is already out and the second part will be out soon.

Go to http://www.hovercarracer.com/ for this fantastic chance to introduce yourself to one of Australia's best authors!!

I was recommended him on Amazon dot com because I had ordered Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown... ( listened for Jello-O )... I think it was Ice temple that they recommended to me. I did like the sound of it but I had put Deception Point in my basket. I had one thriller so did not want another. Since you recommend it I will add him and Ice Station to my "BUY" list. SIGH... the list is growing and my wallet and credit card credit are growing ever smaller lol

Personally Temple's my favourite, the way he's integrated the past and the present appeals to me.

Hi Ive read everyone of matthew Reilly's books. I was recommended them by a friend wasn't sure i'd like them at first but now i'm addicted. scarecrow was brilliant. can't wait to read more. :)

I thoroughly enjoyed the two Matthew Reilly novels I have read and can't wait to read more of his work. I agree that some goings-on are a bit fantastical, but hey, isn't some of the James Bond stuff like that, too? It is what we are there for. Everyday, could-actually-happen, stuff just isn't as thrilling.

I've read all of them except Scarecrow and I loved Ice Station the most. These little killerwhale critters where fantastic! :D

Is scarecrow that good?

After his last one I gave up on him. I've noticed he has another novel out about Hover Car Racing.
Targeted towards the sophisticated young adult market, Hover Car Racer contains the trademark Matthew Reilly styled novel in a Saturday-Morning-Cartoon format which is sure to keep everybody - young and old - reading till the very end.
Guess I am too old though :D

Don't bother with the Hover Car Racing Novel. It's really for kids. The characters are pretty young and story is kind of very predictable. :D
Although I liked the action sequences.

Then read it and tell me what you think of it! :D It is enjoyable but I would have prefered older characters (17 or older).

Hey Rogue

Hover Car Racer was a good serial novel[imo the first 5 parts were good but the last 3 didn't stand upto my expectations & were very predictable]

He's got a new book coming out this year called"7 ancient wonders" which is a stand-alone book
also he's making a movie of his first book "Contest"

books to read are "Temple" & "Shane Schofield" series

check out his website at www.matthewreilly.com
