When it comes to crime fiction I am always telling people to read anything by Elmore Leonard. It would be a sin for anyone who reads crime fiction to go through their life and not pick up one of his novels. I have yet to read another crime fiction author that has anything on him. He is in a league all of his own, he is the Grandmaster. His settings may not tie in with the scene you are looking for though, his stories are usually set in places like Miama and Detroit.

I have not read any of his early books (mainly westerns) but from around 1985 onwards he has been writing crime fiction. I would recommend you to read Get Shorty first, it really is in a class of its own. A few others I would recommend are Out of Sight, Freaky Deaky, Maximum Bob, Riding the Rap.

Thank you...

...That should sort me out for the forseable, shall buy get shorty over the weekend.
Does anyboby know of other authors so I can get my collection going.
Cheers from Gary.

Try a book called 'Whacking Jimmy' by William Wolf - its an entertaining read with mafia themes :)
