Why you would never read trashy romance novels

By way of explanation

Hi nick452, and thanks! Good to meet you.

magemanda,
Sorry I've gotten off on the wrong foot with you. My post above was not intended to stand on its own, but was a direct response to Freya, re her comment on American authors. I was merely pointing to two prominent Brit authors of romance novels.

Further, it was not intended to insult anyone here. The title of the thread, incl. "trashy romance novels," is more than a little disparaging of the genre. I thought my reply was well within the spirit of the thread. Was I misreading?

Novella

No, no Novella - I should perhaps apologise for the tone of my reply. Maybe it's just embarrassment because I have read, and enjoyed, work by Jackie Collins, Jilly Cooper etc ;)

I mis-read the title of the thread repeatedly, I'm still not sure what its meant to say. That's what you get for working til ten at night then going back to work for 5.30am the next day (violins out please)

Don't worry Magemanda, I also enjoy Jilly Cooper  I have all her Rutshire Chronicles but in my defence I originally bought them when I was fairly young as I loved horses and didn't quite anticipate the content  Though I think they are well written and fairly well researched. My favourite is Polo :D

Ice, you are a kindred spirit! That was exactly the reason I started reading them - I kicked off with Riders when I was about thirteen and was a mite surprised by some of what I was reading about. But I had also brought it because of the reference to horses and show-jumping.

My friend(who is a guy) says that trashy romance novels are just female porn, sometimes i think he's right.

Just finished a nice regency last night. Very fluffy, but enjoyable. And I read the entire thing in one night, which always feels like an achievement.

No sex, though. So that disproved your theory, at least for some of them.

Morning Glory

This book by Lavaryl Spencer......I think I spelled it right.......was a good love story. Wish someone would read it and tell me what they thought.

Writers seem to through in some unnecessary stuff in order to attempt to attract more purchases....and she did do this in a small part.

But all in all, it was warm and held the attention of the reader very well. The characters were truly interesting......I loved the old librarian in the story....read it......take a chance.......it isn't just mindless trash.....just a good story.

My mother has always been one to read the mills and boon, infact she never reads any other. You'd think after more than 25 years reading them she'd have read them all or gotten sick of the repeated plots, but no she reads them still and there are always new ones coming out. I'm from Aussie but Mum's from India and even still I know she can read English far better than she can speak it even after 35 years. I don't think she's ever read anything than romance, I think the lure is the romance of course nothing else, just the thought of it is far more romantic than anything in real life (that we've encountered) because they are dreamed up stories. I hope that made sence. I own one Barbara Cartland book, which I tried reading but lost interest. My fave genre is fantasy and I think you can find many genre's within that, love, tragedy, war, mystery....what do you think?

A long time ago, at work we would exchange books - I read a few romance novels, but became bored with them. They all had the same plot.

I understand how you feel about the run of the mill love storys by mills and boon...harlequin......long long time ago.....say 30 years ago, i read some of the Harlequins and that was back when they were more romance than blatant sex acts. I liked some Barbara Cartland and others but on a limited basis because as you said, read one you read them all....except a few of the writers were better than the others so I had favorites.

I read them for the most part for hypnosis....take the mind off reality of the times and because I did dream of the beautiful balls, lovely dresses and lilting waltzes. They were not a full course meal in my reading....just the light dessert.

The two books I mentioned, while they have a love story, are not just mindless love stories.....they have plots and are more story with love a side issue.

I have read so much in my 60 years of being able to read that I have covered many authors works and different types of stories......my tastes have changed thru the years....but those well written with plots that get the reader involved with the story and character I reread.

Oh hell yes. Romance novels are the cookies to davinci code steak. Admit it or not everyone needs a break from having to think so much. Some things are hard to read but nonetheless enjoyable, every once in a while you need the cherry on top. A string of mundane and mindless reading just to let your brain process the torrid information of a home cooked book.

I edmit to having read a few Harlequin novels in a popular litterature class. It was obligatory.

Why I don´t read them is because I think they portray Barbie and Ken, plastic types that are an insult to both actual men and actual women.

I´d rather read about realistic "ordinary" people in unrealistic situations, in sf. *^_^*
