Who likes Star Wars?

I wasn't sure if you forgot about him...

anyway, I don't know that star wars would've failed without guinness. toshiro mifune was slated to play obi wan kenobi at one point, but lucas wanted a merlin-type character instead. guinness did an awesome job, and compared to a lot of actors, he was a god, but he was no toshiro mifune.

Thats like saying supernovas are hotter than zippos. Not only was he an acting god compared to the rest of the cast, he was apparently the only one who kept them going during their difficult on site shoots. We may not even have Star Wars without Alec Guiness.

I had to google it, but I've seen some of that guys movies. Back when I was a kid one of the local stations would play old Godzilla movies, SF classics and every now and then they'd slip in a fighter--swords and martial arts, etc. I can't remember much about his acting but the sword play would have been a LOT more interesting if he'd been Obi Wan.

After all, I read that Star Wars came from an idea Lucas had when he watched a Kurosawa film, can't recall the title right now. I'm surprised he didn't have any Oriental characters at all in his films.

Yeah, it was vaguely based on one of Kurosawa's films, you know the one with the lone samurai ... the name escapes me also, but it is the famous one that isnt Seven Samurai :)

I'm vaguely looking forward to the trequel, I dare say I'll pad along and see it at the cinema if we get the chance, but then I missed Sahara and a few others I wanted to see so I wont hold my breath ... thats what they made DVD players for, right? :)

Phil

you mean Yojimbo?

I think it was "The Hidden Fortress". It was like the influence for Star Wars. Mifune is trying to get out of hostile territory with a princess and two bumbling peasant dudes. (droids..) Though he's actually cast as a general.

If you've the Criterion version on DVD, there's a GREAT interview with George Lucas, where he gives a detailed technical assessment of the beautiful old imagery and filmmaking style! Lots of clips and stills from Kurosawa's films.

I love dvd special features, particularly audio commentary. it's like going to film school twenty bucks at a time, and I can afford that.

So, am I the first one here to have seen Revenge of the Sith?

****, I must be the biggest geek here.

It rocked, by the way. It rocked, it rocked, it rocked!!

Cheers

I really hated the last 2 that I watched. Those movies made me physically sick they were so bad! I'm hearing some good things about the new Sith movie, even from people that hated the last two, so I will probably go see it at some point.

I didn't hate the previous two, but I didn't love 'em either - they were entertaining, but absolutely nothing more than that. It's nice to see how it all ties together in this third film, and it's bloody spectacular to boot!

The SFX and battle scenes an sich make it worth watching.

Cheers

With an anticipation so incredible that almost all I can think off is that zing of a lightsaber, I will be watching RoTS in approx 3 hours.

Martin, you've given me hope, but nothing's gonna stop me from seeing my beautiful Natalie Portman. Uhm, even if she's pregnant. With twins.

I wonder if that worst creation in the whole of the Star Wars universe, Jar Jar Binks, makes an appearance.

Anyone want to hear my impression of Darth Vader?

ds

Natalie Portman looks .. off, in this film. She doesn't look right.

And yes, the other five stink. Ep's I & II had no plot to speak of, and Ep's IV, V & VI are virtually unwatchable due to shabby effects.

*ZZZZZMMMMMMMMMMMM

Cheers

Did you see ESP 4,5,6 when you where a kid or later? I think to really love them you would have to see them when you were just a kid! :) Although ep 6 sucks. It's just the first movie again, warmed up, with teddy bears.
