These are my favoutite science fiction books:

1. The Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy -Douglas Adams
2. Ender's Game -Orson Scott Card
3. Dream Theif -Stephen Lawhead
4. Prey -Michael Crichton
5. The Enigma Score -Sheri S. Tepper
6. Jurassic Park- Michael Crichton
7. Glass -Stephen Palmer (tell me if you have even heard of this book)

What are Yours?

1. Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Rereading it now!
2. The City and the Stars.
3. The End of Eternity.
4. Martian Chronicles.
5. Hugo Winners, vols. 1 and 2, edited by Asimov. These are still the best collections of classic short stories. I always recommend them for people new to sf.

Tons and tons more, but these are my all-time favorites.

Mari, your science fiction anthology book reminded me of a short story I'm searching for about breaking off crystal flowers to go back in time. I've posted a 'Book Search' thread here. Anyone got any ideas?

My favorite 5 Science Fiction Books*

1. Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy - Douglas Adams
2. The 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Blue Bear - Walter Moers
3. Obernewtyn - Isobelle Carmody
4. 1984 - George Orwell
5. Momo - Michael Ende (I really want to re-read this!!)

*Note: Am not traditionally a reader of sci-fi, so these aren't really that hardcore. I'm treating science fiction as separate from fantasy - the latter would be a MUCH longer list!!.

Babel 17 - Samuel Delany
Lord of Light - Rodger Zelazny
Fifth Head of Cerberus - Gene Wolfe
The Island of Dr Death and other short stories - also Gene Wolfe

These are about the only ones I can think of at the minute which really stand out.

Forever War, Joe Haldeman
Quarantine, Greg Egan
When Gravity Fails, George Alec Effinger
The Stars My Destination, Alfred Bester
Dune, Frank Herbert
