I really liked Dan Simmons' The Terror but it might not be exactly what you are looking for. If you want something in the vein of Lovecraft, check out something like Cthulhu's Heirs and other books from Chaosium.

I am about half-way through the series. I stopped when I realized I didn't have the next book in the series and moved on to other stuff. I need to finish the series. Anyhoo, I believe your friend is wrong. Foundation is a great book but the other books in the series (so far) are also pretty good.
