    Personality Test

Yeah, folks, the PEM is still grinding away. Got data? I'll feed it right in.

    Activism

The crimes of the Nazi party were carried out by Germany's military and by paid government servants. Equating those crimes in anyway with activism is like saying every registered Democrat in the US is an antiwar activist. Everyone who silently agreed to stand by and do nothing (as in Nazi...

    The Therapy Thread

Didn't Sigmund Freud say something like "if it looks like a dog and walks like a dog and smells like a dog, it IS a dog"? Are you a Freudian? The part about Siggy that I like is that he seems to really appreciate weirdness. I mean, he started a BUSINESS where he could get the weirdest people on...

    Personality Test

For anyone who missed this important item, my theory of car color as a personality indicator is gaining ground. I wonder if they credited me in this study?: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/06/13/health/13cars.html

    A couple of poems...

Muggle, I prefer not to compare at all, which is why I would choose my last option as feedback. A person of any age should know there is a whole world of possibility and art out there to aspire to, what it is, and how to shape your life as a contributor. I think part of the problem with...

    A couple of poems...

Hey Doug, this isn't a controversy. It's a discussion on a discussion forum. And nobody is saying they hate anything. Your post is inflammatory, for no reason.
  7. novella

    The Therapy Thread

Doc, don't be a perv. That's why I hate coming here. It's like perv times two. You oughta get your people in line. You're the boss. Okay, so I had an incident. My dog got out and then he decided--okay this is weird--he didn't run away. He just acted like a wimp, smelling stuff and looking...

    A couple of poems...

Yeah, I get the point, of course. But would you say to the author, "that's very good," or would you say "that's very good for a 13 year old" or would you say "that's okay, but you're only 13 and you'll probably get better" or would you say "if you really want to be a poet, you ought to read a...

    Activism

Well said, Ell. Further, I would say that activism springs from the powerless, not the powerful. And that activism is voluntary, not compulsive. These two factors further fuel the notion that activism is essentially a liberal undertaking--because it arise from the disenfranchised...

    A couple of poems...

No, I don't think Stewart is implying that at all. More that saying "I'm only 14, but I STILL did this" implies that being 14 means you can have mediocre work and still call it good. The laws of quality apply across the board. Sure, improvement is possible, but why make excuses if you're not...

    Activism

In the hopes of going back to the discussion on activism, I'd like to point out that all activists don't claim to be altruistic, they merely hope to persuade people to do what they want, sometimes for good and sometimes not. Judging each on their own merits, I would say that many activists do...

    A couple of poems...

That's good advice, Shade. But maybe she's a little old man.
  13. novella

    A couple of poems...

Pointless Wonder A question has the idea of an answer on its lip and the question pushes the answer, trying to make it tip. The way the heron sails through the sky, its folded neck a prow against the breeze There is no question there for me. It sails on. Mercury, arsenic, sumac...

    Activism

Definitely in agreement with you on that, Libre.:)
  15. novella

    Activism

An interesting sideline of inquiry has been introduced: the misguided but well-intentioned. So many are against genetically modified food, but what if GM rice eliminates world hunger? What price are we paying, either way? There are activists who regret their actions sometimes, I'm sure...
  16. novella

    Activism

I just simply cannot agree that doing something because your conscience dictates it is self-serving. If we are to judge anyone at all, by their actions and their words, can't we at least give some credit for those whose moral compass is working?
  17. novella

    Activism

Oh yeah, Mother Theresa was definitely full of herself.
  18. novella

    Activism

Yeah, I thought that was really interesting, too, StillI, and I meant to respond to it. That study was reported here (NY Times, I think) when it appeared. I think the Great Apes have been observed doing similar behavior, but it's hard to attribute reasoning or emotion to another species...
  19. novella

    Activism

SFG, you are seriously misrepresenting my point of view here. I've cited several cases in which I think activists have clearly acted selflessly, for the greater good. I think one needs to evaluate each case on its merits, and not generalize. These kind of baseless generalizations have no merit.

    The Therapy Thread

N: Hi doc. Did you lose something? DS: Er, uh, hullo novella. Yes, I dropped, um, my pill. N: Oh, is this it? (picks up a small white pill) Finders keepers. (gulps pill down) Ha ha. DS: WHY DID YOU DO THAT? N: I can’t explain every little thing, doc. Relax. What kind of pill was it...
