Hi Zoli. I was going to post something similar, but then I thought "nah, what's the point. Organic food aficionados have a belief system that's not really open to the facts."
Now, I'm not saying that everyone who buys organic food is a 'believer', but that the bigtime advocates really...
I might be the only person on the planet who really dislikes Mark Twain's style.
I hate his fiction. I don't like the voices or his taste for exaggeration. I imagine him, a well-educated wealthy guy living in a giant house in Connecticut, inventing these 'American Southern' characters to...
What's the difference between a cookbook for men and a regular cookbook?
Also, if this is for a particular person, it's probably best to get a cookbook with the kind of food he'll like. For any beginning cook, The Joy of Cooking is great because it's full of methods and detailed instructions...
Hi there, Tarheel.
What period is your book set in and how did you do the research for it?
(You said to ask anything, so just taking you up on that. Hope you don't mind.)
All I can think of off the bat are books by Claude Levi-Strauss and Ferdinand de Saussure on linquistics, but those are not new books.
Can you be more specific? Are you talking about linquistic theory, phonics, parsing grammar?
I read it, too, and liked it. My review is on this site somewhere. But there is some debate as to how true it is. For instance, the family that Burroughs lived with is suing him for various defamations. Plus Burroughs himself admits to taking some poetic license, I think.
I don't really...
Just to elaborate on this a little, here are some factors that might determine whether you commit to a book or not:
the cover
the blurbs on the cover
having read the author before
prizes won or nominations for prizes
genre (e.g., reading all vampire books)
how long it is
how new it is...
Yeah, I'm just trying to pin down the process most people go through. I find it hard to describe myself.
For instance, while winning an award may indicate some level of quality, I don't think it's a reliable indicator that I would actually enjoy a particular book.
There are some...
No, I never wrote sparknotes. I was a staff writer in NYC for quite a while. If the 'beast' that you refer to is the reader, then I guess I did and do feed the beast.
Nothing wrong with that. Nothing magical either.
I find your blind faith in sparknotes really funny.
So you're intimidated and impressed by anyone who goes to Harvard? Ha.
That Sparknote was written by a couple of wankers--David Hopson and Brian Phillips-- in the offices of Spark Publishing in NY. They write sparknotes for a living. Oooo, I'm really impressed. I was doing such work twenty...
Nick Flynn deserves a thread. I think people have probably mentioned him here and there, but I think he’s great, and he’s definitely coming up.
Another Bullshit Night in Suck City is his autobiographical account of his teens and early 20s. Let the title be a warning that it’s not a happy...
I've read, from my list below, Nanny, Bridget 1, Prep, and Girl's Guide. The only one I would recommend is Girl's Guide.
Also, I personally think Valley of the Dolls is not chick lit, per se (as these categories go). For one thing, it's long. For another, it is part of the larger, more...
No, actually, I wasn't which is very clear in the post (and why you've taken it out of context). It refers very specifically to that relationship.
A close reading of the text shows no constant conflict at all. She is, as I said before, alternately adoring and resentful, as is the case with...
