Last read: Star of The Sea - Joseph O'Connor. Thoroughly recommended.
Current read: Lazy Bones - Mark Billingham. I have not read this author before and am only mildly interested 100 pages through.
Nex read: Wolves of the Calla - Stephen King. Hopefully this will be my next read - I am...
It has been a few years since I read this but I think it is because she knows that if she does accept Nobu as her Danna, she can never have a relationship with the Chairman. I guess it is difficult for her to accept that her dream of being with the Chairman is over - even if it is was unlikely...
I would add Margaret Atwood and John Irving. Although I have come across a couple of John Irving books that weren't fantastic (The Fourth Hand, Water Method Man) I always hold out high hopes and am usually not dissapointed.
I was thinking about buying this as well (due of course to Martin's comments) but it annoys me when paperback books cost more than £10. You'll have to let me know whether its worth it.
Hannibal, If you liked Wally Lamb, his other book 'She's come undone' is also excellent. The book has a female main character and follows her progress in dealing with an abusive childhood, and the subsequent phsycological problems and self destructive behaviour that stay with her through her...
Funnily enough, A Widow for One Year was the first John Irving book I read and I liked it enough to read practically all of his other books so I guess that is a good recommendation!
Having said that, I think Garp, Cider House Rules or A Prayer for Owen Meany might be a better introduction to...
I definately agree with the above. One thing that always bugs me is when I watch a movie before I read the book (must admit it doesn't happen that often). I find it impossible to imagine any of the characters differently to how they were portrayed in the movie.
On a slightly different...
There is an author called Steven Saylor who has written a variety of murder mystery books set in Ancient Rome. They include a lot of real historical characters and events but the central character is fictional.
Do you believe that Crake wanted Snowman to shoot him? You would think that he would want be around at the end to enjoy the results of his master plan. If he didn't, then why did he kill Oryx? Did he really care for her? (and then become mad with jelousy because of Snowman?)
I love Iain Bank's books as a general rule. My favourites are Complicity and Espedair Street. The are not as weird as The Wasp Factory but the writing is nevertheless still superb with engrossing plots and characters.
Canal Dreams was quite a good read but not up to the standard of the...
I read The Secret History a good few years ago and thought it was a fantastic book - very unique and compelling. I must admit that I was very dissapointed with The Little Friend. The beginning was promising and I liked a lot of the characters but everything just seemed to start drifiting in the...
Hi everone. At the moment I am re-reading The Robber Bride by Margaret Atwood. Payday next week and I can place my monthly order at Amazon! I am really looking forward to reading the new Margaret Atwood - it has had some really good reviews on this site.
hi, I have been posting over the last couple of days but suddenly thought you might think me rude for not posting here!
I pretty much read all genre fiction books and am really looking forward to getting some good recommendations (and hopefully giving some too!).
How about Flood by Richard Doyle. I don't read many disaster books so I don't really know if it is a good example but it was quite gripping and easy to read.
Ell, I guess it is actually just a matter of taste. I have really enjoyed studying some books and felt that I got something extra out of them.
Thanks for the welcome :-)
Good news! I have read all of his books and agree with your comments completely. Perfect when you dont' want to concentrate too much and just want a fast paced, page turning action book.
I would be interested in your review of the new one although i will have to wait for it to come out in...
Efren - I read Love in the Time of Cholera recently and really enjoyed it. It was the first of his books I tried and inspired me to read One Hundred Years of Solitutude which was also a really enjoyable book, although it did take quite a while to get into.
