Ah! Felipe Alfau! I had not heard of him either until a friend recommended him to me. As far as I can discern, the gentleman wrote only one full novel and it is "Locos." And that one novel is enough for me to have added him to my Top 10 all-time favorite writers ever. Like Calvino's "If On...
Ummm...you ask about them all at once instead of allowing me to elaborate on each individually. So I will give you only one piece of the answer now.
Most of these writers do not tell a linear story (that's "beginning at the beginning, proceeding to the middle, and wrapping up at the end" for...
In other threads, it has been mentioned that there are two kinds of people in this world -- those who enjoy reading Dan Brown and those who would rather have their eyes burned out with white-hot pointy sticks. However, some Dan Brown readers have asked for help, alternatives, suggestions for...
You'll all get called rabble-rousers and have your opinions marginalized by the authorities, which will, in turn, encourage the general membership to disparage any discussion in which you opt to participate until the best thing to do is go find a minor deity with a comfy padded cell and play...
Then why is it still here? Much of this thread has been about "insults" that moderators have allowed to let stand. I think that's where things get out of hand. If "you're a troll" is allowed, then some else thinks, "well, grammar nazi" must be allowable to, and then, before you know people...
So what are you saying Stewart? Do they hand out ritalin with each membership there? Or is there some other forum pixie dust that removes spam, restores a shiny lustre to aging hardword floors, eliminates name-calling, keeps you regular, dissolves potentially offensive posts and...
Not true! I figure the alcohol consumption levels the playing field -- the gun-toting mad raving hunters are just as likely to shoot themselves as the deer. :D
I'm saying whenever you have large numbers of people you will have disagreements. It's up to moderators to maintain order -- consistently and equitably. Oh! I'm out of the forum business. You're information is out of date. :)
I have no doubt he is busy, but the problems in any...
Don't tell me! Tell the big guy in charge! (Actually it's circumstances beyond his control -- we are thinking early next week the asylum should be back in business.)
Ah! Just like the good ol' days Martin seems to miss so much! :D
Yeah, and...
Is that all you've got?
Where's the diatribe about what a wicked evil person I am because I don't watch TV, eat at McDonald's, or listen to Jessica Simpson?
Come on people! Bring it! :p
Well, the new tuck n' roll upholstery job still isn't finished in the ol' padded cell (soon, I'm being assured), but here's some food for thought:
1) This is "The Book Forum," which is like being WalMart in a way. There are plenty of "boutique" forums out there, smaller and more focused...
For 15 pages, I have resisted, but it's hot and I'm tired and I need something to cheer me up so here goes:
Are you rabble-rousing there, Martin!?! :D
Don't worry, my padded cell will be mended soon and I'll be returning to it gladly. :D
In my perfect world, yes, parents would be looking after their own kids full-time, but that isn't always possible, and even if you start out with that plan, circumstances can change (for instance, my mother died when I was four and my father had to work to support us and couldn't be home with us...
Here I go, about to stir up trouble again...but here's a Mom's perspective.
Raising kids is tough. It's the hardest job there is, and the most rewarding. Many people see little kids and think to themselves "awww, how cute!" and think what a great and easy job taking care of kids would be...
Haha!
Ask a few of the members here* and they'll gladly tell you: I'm a far bigger bitch than anything Mother Nature could cook up!
However any hurricane that bears my name is bound to be trouble! Head for high ground and then feel free to blame me for the damage. :cool...
This was true, you got the e-mail a couple of years too late. It happened in August of 2003. It was spectacular! With just a backyard telescope, people could look out and see the Red Planet and really tell that, indeed, it is red! And it is a planet, not just a bright light in the night sky...
