Start with the best. Raymond E. Fiest, David Eddings, Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman all write amazingly great fantasy, especially Fiest. The Riftwar Cycle (Magician, Silverthorn and A Darkness at Sethanon) is the best fantasy there is IMHO and is a good place to start. The Shadowleauge (The...
I think you should start with watch books and read Nightwatch last. There is no ties between the watch books, but they appear to be in some sort of a chronological order.
Me too, but you have to remember that Pug would have never found his power if it wasn't for his time on Kelewan, or more to the point, his time with with the assembly but I was glad that he realised that he couldn't be a Tsurani Great One.
The reason I like Fiest's battles is that they are detailed to a point where they paint a perfect picture in your head. Fiest uses terminoligy like he was there, using fencing terms for one on one combat such as lunge, parry and riposte.
Another great "scene" is in Magicians sequel, Silverthorn where Father Nathan Destroys the undead Mordehel after the High Preistess of Limis-Kragma tried to call it's soul back from the dead.
I am the same- 2-4 books at the time, at the moment I am reading silverthorn, redemption of althalus, the diamond throne and I am re-reading Magician (i just loved it so much :D)

I think the "scene" (for want of a better word) in which Pug destroys the Tsurani Games arena in Magician is the most amazing passage in any Fantasy book, ever.
