That's the bit! Seeing some other books that people have mentioned, I've been reminded of some more:
The Amber Spyglass - Philip Pullman
Most of The Dark Tower, though especially books IV and VII
The Wrong Boy - Willy Russell
The end of The Lord of the Rings (book and film)

Unfortunately, everyone else in the house is even more pathetic than me at this kind of thing, so if anything is going to be said, it'll be me saying it. :(
Peder - foolishly, we didn't make the length of their stay with us a concrete agreement. I guess this was because a) they said they...
Thanks Pontalba. Another vote for just coming right out and saying it. You're right, tact and diplomacy haven't worked. I would still feel guilty though. You don't fancy coming over and saying it for me, do you? You could stay for a bit - but not too long, obviously! :D
I will let you...
:D That idea is looking more and more attractive!
Yes, you're right, I think I'll have to be blunt. But I'm a bit crap at that, to be honest. I'll worry about hurting their feelings. :o (Not that they'e overly worried about ours, of course.)
ABC, I think you're right: we've made...
Hi DontGoAway. I've already dropped into the conversation a couple of times that it would be a shame if they went home without seeing the sights. The lazy one admitted it would be, but the thing is that she is incredibly selfish and does not really care about the other person. All she cares...
Thanks Gem. :)
I've already been to the Tourist Information centre and presented them with the glossy brochures about the places they're interested in (complete with accommodation listings!). I've waxed lyrical about how beautiful these places are, and still the lazy one refuses to budge. :(...
Have any of you ever been in the situation where houseguests have outstayed their welcome? If so, what did you do about it?
We currently have some relatives staying with us. They're in the UK for four weeks, and the idea was that they would stay with us for a while, and then continue on to...
The first book I remember crying at was Watership Down by Richard Adams. I was so upset that I couldn't re-read it for years. Since then, there have been too many to name. I'm a big softy and easily imagine myself into the characters' situations. Like Still, I also only have to see people...
I've used eBay quite a lot, mostly for books and CDs, but I haven't been on for ages. I tend to have spates where I'm buying like crazy, and then I won't even visit for months.
I always bid at the last minute, and I've won everything I've bid for except one thing - a lovely trinket box...
Shade, I would really recommend Going Postal. It had a slightly different feel to it somehow (possibly because the main character was a new one) and some excellent satire on the postal service. It's now become my favourite Pratchett novel.
The above is sirmyk's opening post in this thread.
I can understand that, having made your choice of fiction or non-fiction, it is very tempting to justify your decision, which in turn leads onto debate about religion. But it is possible just to register your choice, as many members have...
That sums up how I feel about Terry Pratchett. Yes, I know a lot of people here don't like his work, but I do. It's great to revisit the old locations and characters, but Pratchett still manages to come up with fresh ideas. Look at how Vetinari, who has always been a fairly minor character...
Welcome to the forum, Wildrose! :)
There's another James Patterson thread here which might be of interest to you. :)
I have read three of his books - the ones that deal with the winged children - which I enjoyed. They were entertaining page-turners, but I don't think I will be reading any...
