Not to my knowledge. He's still under contract 'til the fall or something. Rumour mill around here is that some of the stars are getting a bit antsy about this season's storyline. Have you seen this about his singing episode?

    Neil Gaiman

beergood, I agree. Gaiman tells a spooky tale that is engaging for both adult and young readers. He hasn't dumbed it down and isn't overly preachy. While I was reading it, I kept thinking it was something I would have loved reading when I was ten or eleven. As to the discussion at...

    Jeffrey Eugenides: Middlesex

Chapter Eleven is part of the US bankruptcy code. People or companies who file for US bankruptcy are said to be in "Chapter Eleven".

    Ann Patchett: Bel Canto

"Brevity cult"? I thought it was a good book, not a great book. Patchett did a good job of pulling me into that ballroom - feeling like I was one of those huddled on the floor - and seeing the situation through the eyes of the characters.

What kind of reader are you?

Like a lot of you, I am voracious in intent, moderate in practice. Other interests and obligations seem to get in the way. I try to read at my desk during lunch, but it rarely works out -- seems that cracking open a book is like an open invitation to co-workers, saying, "Hey, Ell's not busy...

Orson Scott Card to J.K. Rowling

That was my take on it, too. I think Card makes a good point about her hypocrisy. She didn't mind the material being on the website (where it helped promote her books); but now is launching a lawsuit because it's in book form. Everyone knows what the source material is; I don't see the...

the perfect actor for James Bond!

Sean Connery and Daniel Craig are my quintessential Bonds. I don't mind the blonde hair. Pont, I remember Roger Moore in The Saint and thought he was better suited as Simon Templar, too. He was too cartoon-like as Bond for my taste. I barely remember Timothy Dalton in the role.

    There Will Be Blood

Difficult film to watch, but very well done. I don't think it could have turned out any other way - not unless Plainview changed. While watching, I kept waiting for him to show some sort of redeeming quality or have an epiphany that would change his course of destructive behaviour. Now...

    Friends????

Okay. Thanks, you two. I thought maybe I was missing something obvious like being able to sneak in, read your pms and track down where you live. :D

    Friends????

I know this sounds obtuse -- but I still don't "get it"!

    Friends????

Cool. I now have three friends! It's progressing a little like high school.

    Friends????

Admittedly, I haven't been around much lately, but when I signed in today, I got a notification about "friends" I dutifully clicked the link and have now accepted two friends. What does this mean, exactly? I searched the FAQs and I know what they are ( even how to break a friendship...

    Banned books

My emphasis above. In all good conscience, how can anyone ban something they've never read. Additionally, does the school board think high school students have never heard (or used) those curse words? Who do they think they're protecting? It's baffling.

Where are you? (in the book you are reading) - please read 1st post

    My grandmother's silkworm cocoonery.

    Gustave Flaubert: Madame Bovary

I remember thinking I wanted to slap Emma upside the head and tell her to grow up! But I doubt it would have done any good. She was egocentric to the core.

    Gustave Flaubert: Madame Bovary

I read this a number of years ago, now, but the main thing I remember feeling is that Emma was a girl/woman in love with the idea of "Love" and being "in love". She really had no idea how to love someone beyond the superficial first blush of romantic attraction. From what I recall, she...
