    Welcome Stewart, O Senior Moderator

Holy ---- ! The Fiction section is so tidy I hardly recognized it. Would you like to come to my house and do some cleaning up? :D

    Is anything possible?

I take the phrase "anything's possible" to be a figure of speech rather than a truism. i.e. Language used in a figurative or nonliteral sense to make a point rather than to state a fact.

    Jonathan Franzen: The Corrections

Ronny, I saw that you were reading this and wondered what you'd think. It's a book that I mean to re-read. (I originally got it out from the library to read, but bought it as soon as I saw it on the "clearance" table at Chapters). I agree about Gary's wife. She seemed like the type who...

    Let's meet up (online)

Just got off the skypecast. DS, monkeycatcher and pink shadow are still there. It's a VERY cool way to communicate. I was hoping to hear from ABC, Still and Cajunmama. Maybe next time? ell

    Truman Capote: In Cold Blood

This will really date me, but I read In Cold Blood when it was first published and I was still in high school. I remember getting flack from family members who accused me of reading sensationalized garbage. People either loved it or hated it. The detractors, particularly other...

    Lovely and abandoned words

    Personality Test

So do my borrowed cars count? They are beige, dark blue, and charcoal grey.

    Personality Test

I was wondering, too. Does it work if you don't own a car? See, I don't have my own car, but do get to drive whatever happens to be "not in use" by other family members if I ask really, really nicely.

    Activism

While I agree that not all changes wrought by activism are found to be good in the long run, I don't see that this should preclude the use of activism to effect change. I completely agree that there's always more than one side to an issue; and it's true, information and views presented by...

    Activism

If we're to condemn activism based on this logic, then we may as well condemn the progress made in terms of the human and civil rights we hold so dear. If it weren't for activism, women wouldn't have the vote, blacks would still be attending segregated schools and sitting at the back of the...

    Kazuo Ishiguro

I read and loved Remains of the Day, but from what I'm reading here, it sounds like I should pass on Never Let Me Go. I took a quick peek at the BOM discussion and there seems to be a similar level of dissatisfaction. Ions, I know your opinion. Shade, what's your more recent take on it...

    Happy Birthday Shade!

33 eh? Oh, I remember it well. Two children under three, a mortgage, chronic sleep deprivation and no vacation time. Happy belated birthday, Shade! :D

Hey Ice Hockey Fans !!!!! Deal?

The Canucks are barely hanging onto 8th in the West by their old, worn, stretched and frayed, ready-to-snap jocks. By Saturday (their next game), I fear the last shred of elastic will have given way to see them plummet to 10th. :( :(

    Margaret Atwood: The Blind Assassin

Yes, MM would be a Laura. I think Susan Sarandon would be a Callie.

    Margaret Atwood: The Blind Assassin

So true. To some extent, they still are, aren't they. Yes, she is. I've seen Atwood interviewed on TV and she has a very dry wit and doesn't take herself too seriously. I like that a lot. She's one of the very few authors I'd like to meet in person.
