Hey Ice Hockey Fans !!!!! Deal?

Moto, the Flyers look in pretty good shape. They're a good 11 points up on 8th place Montreal. So unless they completely tank in the latter part of the season, they should make the playoffs. The West is a completely different matter. Only 6 points separate the teams in 3rd to 8th place...

    Margaret Atwood: The Blind Assassin

I wasn't comparing her to all alcoholics. I was referring to you asking why she didn't grow a backbone earlier. My point being that inidividuals need to be at a certain point in their lives - emotionally and in life experience - before they can make certain types of tough decisions. At the...

    Margaret Atwood: The Blind Assassin

Surely you're not extrapolating the relationships of one female character in one book to all women?

    Margaret Atwood: The Blind Assassin

I think you know the answer to this. :) Everyone grows up and matures at their own rate. Circumstances, personality, emotional stability/instability are all factors. Iris wasn't ready to grow up until she was ready. It's kind of like asking a recovering alcoholic why they didn't quit sooner.

    Margaret Atwood: The Blind Assassin

I agree with you about how she fell into her marriage with Richard. It was her 'choice' in name only. What else could she do given the family circumstances and the way in which she was raised? Only Laura could see an alternative, but she wasn't raised to feel responsible for a younger sister...

    Happy Birthday Ell!!

Thank you, one and all. I had a lovely relaxing day. The family took me to a very nice seafood restaurant - The Fish House at Stanley Park for those who know Vancouver. The food was divine and I had (maybe) one too many martinis. :D And ds, my sporting team -The Canucks - are an enigma...

    Margaret Atwood: The Blind Assassin

I think Alex was the perfect foil. He filled the needs of both Iris and Laura - though in completely different, almost polar opposite, ways. To Iris, he was the forbidden, the dangerous - a clandestine life away from her glamourous, smiling, society-wife persona - a way to rebel at a time...

    TBF: Moderation Issues

Moto, Still, you rabble-rousers! I just bumped into this thread late last night and by the time I read through it all - with all the sidetracks to other links - it was way past my bedtime and certainly too late to post anything coherent. I really don't have anything new to add that hasn't...

    Margaret Atwood: The Blind Assassin

Perhaps I should clarify. I don't think she cared what people thought at that point in her life - i.e the old Iris. When she was younger, she cared a lot - which is what got her into trouble. Near the end, I don't think she felt the need to clarify things for "the public". Let sleeping...

    Margaret Atwood: The Blind Assassin

I think there was love between Iris and Laura, but no closeness - they were too different from each other emotionally. Laura and Iris lived their lives constantly second-guessing each other's motives and being wrong most of the time. Iris was always the "big" sister trying to protect Laura -...

    Margaret Atwood: The Blind Assassin

She was so down-to-earth and no-nonsense. Yet, I think she was part of the reason why Laura and Iris ended up so unprepared for life. She, as much as their father, set them apart from the other townspeople - constantly reinforcing how they were better and that they shouldn't associate with the...

    Margaret Atwood: The Blind Assassin

I don't think you are. Don't go yet. (I've been away for the weekend - had intended to post a quick response on Friday, but didn't get a chance.) I ended up really liking the older Iris. Yes, I liked her. I thought her observations about young women were spot on.

Bad Valentine's Poetry--or any bad poetry!

    Margaret Atwood: The Blind Assassin

I think you mean "Iris's" intent was to look after Laura. If so, then yes, she did (make a mistake). But isn't that what Iris's story is largely about? She made choices in her youth that, in retrospect, she clearly regrets. Now, in her latter years, she tries to make amends, or at least...

    Margaret Atwood: The Blind Assassin

Ah, I see. You're the literary equivalent of motokid. Taking the opposing view just for the H of it. It's quite evident that Iris marries Griffen because it's expected of her, not because of any gold digging intent. Her father's lame "it's up to you" is a cop-out of the highest magnitude...

    Margaret Atwood: The Blind Assassin

Interesting you should mention the clothing. I think it's one of the things that make it more authentic to me. Women of her generation and social status were constantly judged by their clothing. Someone like Winifred would size another woman up in about two seconds based on shoes, hair and...

    Margaret Atwood: The Blind Assassin

I'm surprised nobody's posted yet. Has anyone finished? Your thoughts? The Blind Assassin is my favourite book by Atwood, so far. It has everything that makes a book work for me - a many-layered story with a believable and honest portrayal of the main protaganist coupled by wonderful...
