    Looking for gorgeous Canadian fiction:

novella, I really liked Runaway. Almost all the stories affected me on a deeply personal level. Munro tends to do that to me. :o

    Looking for gorgeous Canadian fiction:

Rogue, I was browsing through a bookstore yesterday and came across Vancouver Stories. It's a collection of stories set in Vancouver by Canadian and Vancouver-based authors. Some of the contributing authors are those already mentioned: Alice Munro, Douglas Coupland, Wayson Choy, William...

    Ray Bradbury: Fahrenheit 451

Given that it was originally written in 1950 (a shorter version) as a science fiction story for a sci-fi digest, I think Fahrenheit 451 has withstood the test of time remarkably well. It's a cautionary and visionary tale that touches on much of what affects western society now, such as...

    Margaret Atwood

Where to begin? Alias Grace as mentioned by angerball is very good. It's probably the most accessible of Atwood's non-speculative (sci-fi) works in that the narrative is pretty straight forward. But if you liked Oryx and Crake, you might want to try The Handmaid's Tale, though after O & C...

    Looking for gorgeous Canadian fiction:

ions, I wasn't trying to be argumentative about Bellows. Just that I don't think too many would consider him Canadian given that he spent so little time here. The others you mention (Mistry, et al) have chosen to become Canadians and live in Canada, a different situation...

    Looking for gorgeous Canadian fiction:

Saul Bellow was Canadian born, but moved to the US at a young age. He was essentially raised and educated in the US, so claiming him as a Canadian is a bit disingenous.

    Looking for gorgeous Canadian fiction:

She's actually a native of Chicago. She only works part of the time in Quebec as a forensic anthorpologist. A couple more Vancouver-based authors: George Bowering (who is now the poet laureate for Canada) and Spider Robinson who writes science fiction.

    Looking for gorgeous Canadian fiction:

Off the top of my head: Wayson Choy - The Jade Peony and Paper Shadows - Both are set in Vancouver Alice Munro - writes short story collections, but some of them are set in Vancouver. Carol Shields - The Stone Diaries and Unless are probably her best known - Lived in Victoria...

Sticky for students in General Book Discussion?

Not sure it would solve the problem of lazy students, but wouldn't hurt to give it a try.

How about Island by Aldous Huxley? Otherwise, I'll second Oryx and Crake by Atwood.

    His/her speciality to me

Crystal, Sometimes I feel you're a fragile, ephemeral whisp of gossamer that needs gentle care. At other times, I think you're a wise soul trapped in an aphasic shell just bursting and struggling to get out. You wear your heart where it's easily stomped on. Not easy and very brave.

    A short short story

This is an old thead, but I only stumbled upon it while doing a search for something else. I think it deserves to be bumped up for newer members who haven't read some of Ms Wilde's writing. Ren, any chance you'll post another piece here? I can't begin to describe how I felt as I read this...
