Hey Ronny. Glad you joined this discussion.
She really was a constant throughout wasn't she? She was in a position to observe everything that transpired in Smithy's family - probably the only person - who could understand the real Smithy. The fact that she was close, yet distanced, gave her a...
I strongly disagree with this statement. The whole notion of suicide lines and crisis lines refutes it. When people are depressed and suicidal, they feel there is no other solution. It's like a big black hole that is all-consuming. When someone gets to this point, they need help - one day at...
I rather like the Penguin Classics covers. They seem to fit my perception of the books better. Dark, ominous and, as you say, slightly otherwordly.
Shade, so glad you read Fifth Business and enjoyed it. I came by it just a couple of years ago - it being published a tad after my Canadian...
Kook, now that you've finished Night Train, you should give Time's Arrow a go. I liked it better than Night Train. In retrospect, I found Night Train a bit forced in terms of the 'hard-boiled detective' style, but maybe as Shade mentioned, that was Amis's intention.
There's another thread on Calvino HERE that mentions If on a winter's night . . . , but it was more about the author in general, so thought I'd start a separate thread.
I loved this book **gush, gush**. No, really. I read previous comments in the other thread about it being gimmicky, so was...
The point of the false leads was problematic for me too. On the one hand
Perhaps, what makes the death so disturbing to Mike is Jennifer's rationalization. If she (Jennifer) is right, then what's the meaning of her own life which she views as inferior?
Yech, I hate these ugly spoiler things!
Sadly, this is the perception. My older son was/is a voracious reader. He was reading before he started school. At the end of grade one, he was assessed with a reading level equivalent to grade five. By the time he got to grade three, he decided it wasn't cool to be called 'vocabulary' man...
Very interesting thread technokitty.
I used to watch quite a few Hong Kong movies when I was in university. They ranged from the kung-fu/chop socky type to modern comedies and classical Chinese stories. I seldom watch them anymore. My biggest beef with most of them is the terrible...
Well, I think there are a number of people on this forum who quite liked Fifth Business and Roberrtson Davies in general. Take a look at this thread. There may be other threads that mention it as well, but you can do a search if you're so inclined.
As for your homework assignment, you won't...

Just picked up these at a local used book store:
The Blind Assassin - Margaret Atwood.
It's a hardcover in mint condition. I originally read a library copy and I've been looking for a good used copy ever since.
Remains of the Day - Kazuo Ishiguro.
Another one I've been on the lookout...
I requested Penelopiad at the library and as of today, I'm 34th on the 'holds' list.
It's currently on sale at Chapters.ca (ions, are you reading this?) for $13.75 CAD, so I may break down and buy it 'cause the library copy's not coming anytime soon. :(
I only listen to the "news/weather/traffic station" on my commute into the city. That way, I can hear the same news at least three times before I get into work, and get a blow-by-blow account of the traffic tie-up I happen to be sitting in.
Why? Out of habit, I guess.
