Interesting. It did occur to me that it would be different if I actually heard it as he intended, but in my mind, it came across as someone with a very bad head cold.
I wonder if it's the way I - with my Canadian ear - interpreted the pronunciation? i.e. the way you hear it in your head is...
I've just finished both Einstein's Monsters and Heavy Water. I'm a big fan of well-written short stories, so approached these collections with cautious optimism. I was both pleasantly surprised and a tad disappointed by some of the pieces. As previously mentioned, the quality varies quite a...
Ions, I don't think you need to know all the historical background before you start. It's helpful, but not necessary for the enjoyment of the book.
If you want to do some background reading on the Napoleonic Wars, it won't hurt, but I wouldn't spend an inordinate amount of time on it...
I'm feeling much better now. I took a few of those little yellow pills and a couple of green ones just to be sure. It seems to have done the trick. Don't know what came over me. I'm usually so very calm.
But, mmn, I still don't see the doc. There's just a funny smell coming from that...
Hey, where's Dr. Smirky? I came all this way to see the great doc - highly recommended by a pink cat - and he isn't here. What's up with that?
I just need someone to talk to. You know, a sympathetic ear, a comforting pat on the back. Not much really. Instead, I find this pile of junkmail...
What about those of us addicted to dark chocolate?
Dark chocolate-covered ginger, almonds, macadamias, anything will do. In a pinch, I've been known to nibble semi-sweet baking chocolate!
The Joy Luck Club hit a very personal nerve. I'm a wuss and cry over anything, but this movie made me sob - great wet, slurpy, hiccupping sobs. Very embarassing, but just couldn't help myself. I've subsequently seen it another half dozen times or so and I still cry.
ell :o
Thanks for your opinions, Shade and CDA. I will give Money a try after I finish the collections.
I was quite impressed with Time's Arrow and Amis's ability to maintain coherence throughout the backwards storytelling. It could easily have gotten derailed in less skillful hands.
And...
Completely forgot about this thread. I did give Left Behind a try. I read the first half, skimmed the rest and could not get over the feeling I was being preached to. Being the contrary soul that I am, I did not like it.
Just finished reading Night Train and Time's Arrow over the weekend. I found both to be unique and intriguing enough to have requested another two of his books, Eintein's Monsters and Heavy Water, from the library.
CDA (and others), what makes Yellow Dog so bad? It's also available at the...
Night Train by Martin Amis. This was the first book by Amis I've read and I found it unique and mesmerizing - mesmerizing in the sense I couldn't put it down. I'm now onto Time's Arrow which is just as unique, but in a different way. Not quite sure how I feel about Amis, yet. At least he's...
There weren't any ties that I can recall. I have a feeling this won't end in a tie either. There are still five days left to vote and there are always people who wait til the last couple of days.
I've sent some suggestions to mehastings via pm on how a tie might be handled.

I agree. 'Worrying' doesn't help, but it does make sense to know some facts so you can decide whether to stampede off for a flu shot or not. ;)
Now that is a concern! At the rate they're killing poultry, a piece of KFC may end up costing $20.
The danger of a pandemic occuring has always been around. It's a natural cyclical occurence due to the nature of viruses to mutate. It's something that people in public health and epidemiology have known for a long time - one of the reasons that stats and infectious diseases are tracked...
I enjoyed Hyperion enough, but the ending made it seem too much of a set up for the sequel, Fall of Hyperion. In that respect, it doesn't work well as a stand-alone book. I'd say persevere only if you're ready to either go onto the sequel or be satisfied with an ending with loose ends.
Thank you all for the comments. They're much appreciated. It's almost a year since I wrote this, so it's interesting to see how I feel about it now. Time for a revisit and revisions.
leckert, wheezing 'great pants', huh? :D
And Still, you got me. I'm glad I conveyed what I wanted to...
